ProgPower USA 2008

And... there's the demographic that PPUSA appeals to: DT rehash.

I'm not going to say Swanö should headline (except if he had the original lineup of Edge Of Sanity) but please, the same old shit is still the same old shit. I don't want to step on these newer bands but unless they're excellent at what they do (see Circus Maximus) they're just another generic prog band- which incidentally undermines the entire point of 'prog'.

Thank you. ::applauds::

I don't say that on the actual PP board for fear of getting my post deleted or myself banned or starting a flame war but ripping of Dream Theater (a band I cannot stand in the first place) and Symphony X defeats the purpose of being progressive. Not only that, but it's kinda sickening seeing that most of Prog Power's fanbase is a bunch of ex-glam/AOR rock fans that just want whatever most closely resembles their favorite cock rock band. It's beyond me to trash bands like Orphaned Land and Amorphis but praise the latest Jorn album or the latest AOR-esque CD.

That seems a tad unfair, but I could be wrong

Nope, you're right, it IS unfair. Perhaps it describes a good chunk of the PPUSA forum people, who can be somewhat narrowminded at times, but they are only a fraction of the 1500 people who attend the festival every year, so to lump everyone there into that group is indeed unfair.

unfortunately, that is the representation of the Progpower crowd that a lot of people get the impression of (myself included to be honest). It's not fair, but let's be honest... the vocal minority make the impression.

Liking/disliking them is one thing , but whether or not they are a big name is not opinion based dude. Amorphis is a bigger name than pretty much every band that has played Prog Power except for IE and Nightwish. In fact, they were supposed to support Type- O Negative not too long ago but it got canceled.

Bigger than Helloween, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian? Maybe in YOUR circle, but not in mine. Bigger based on what cocksize? Albums sold? Drawing power?
GMAFB....

Thank you. ::applauds::

Gutless coward....You couldn't be MORE wrong about the fanbase either.
Stick to your Gigantour & Ozzfest. Be a lemming....

Yeah, beyond unfair...

Let's turn the tables, what do you think outsiders think of Symphony X when they read some of the shit that gets posted here?

Agreed. Same thing. And i'm having this same battle on a local board with a bunch of new people who are young, immature, and fucking up the board right and left (yeah yeah, i know... pot calling the kettle black right? :D) and i keep saying shit needs to change and they need to shape up because it'd be damned embarrassing if people thought those folks represented the seattle metal scene.

I'm not dogging the progpower forum as a whole or the crowd as a whole. just sayin', as unfair as it is, it's just the reality.

Helloween never played Prog Power but yeah, Amorphis is bigger in terms of drawing power and album sales (as of recent, that is). You don't get the support slot for a Type-O Negative tour in 2005 for NOT selling albums (lol). I mean if you honestly think Gamma Ray is a "big" band in the US you really need to look at how other bands are doing here. Facts are facts, it has nothing to do with your opinion on these bands. I don't like Killswitch Engage at all for example, but they are still a huge name regardless.

And I'm sorry for the generalization. I am a fan of the festival and I do not enjoy the aforementioned "cock rock", so at least there's a few of us who don't fit into that demographic. However, a huge chunk of its fanbase makes up that demographic and it's really sad. I mean obviously you'll get a bad batch of fans to anything and everything, but I'd assume people who listen to progressive music would generally be more open-minded. I guess I got a lot to learn.

PS, I'll add that in 2003, it was Cradle Of Filth that got the Type-O support gig on tour and that was when they were signed to Sony and did Ozzfest (arround the same time at least)... so yeah Amorphis is definitely bigger than all of those bands without question.

Damn...you sound like me a few months ago on this very forum. l swore l would never come back here. But, l returned from Russia... decided to pop in & was surprised as hell at the change. Hell...l like it here better than the PPUSA forum with all it's 'ophiles & lemmings. l thought l would never say that. But the worship there has escalated to the point that if you have a differing opinion(especially about a band in the lineup) you get slagged.

now now J-Dub, whats wrong with Gigantour or Ozzfest? For the record the first time I ever saw the beautiful band in which we're on these forums for was at Gigantour. And alot of new fans because of that fest :D. Anyway I think this thread is quickly rolling down hill. The main reason for Prog Power IMO is to have a couple well known bands and the rest of the bands aer more often than not, unheard ofs, and thats what its used for, showing off some new bands, with some diverse styles of music.

Just because you tour with type 0 negative, doesn't make you a good band, or well known. Because I 'sadly' know about that band, and not a single other soul does. And i'm pretty sure there souls are alot happier than mine :D

Anyhoot, kudos to Iced Earth, Andromeda, and the rest of the okay band, Id love to go but can't.

Welcome to my world.. ;)

I'm not dogging the progpower forum as a whole or the crowd as a whole. just sayin', as unfair as it is, it's just the reality.

Yep, this I can understand. And it's a shame that the noisy few are giving the whole such a crappy reputation.

lmao, unfair or not, minority or not, his statement concisely summed up the attendees who actually post on the forum. Since I've never been to the actual event, I won't comment on the others. I can however, comment as I have concerning the lineup and the kind of demographic it appeals to.

Ok, clearly you didn't read my argument. It's simple logic dude...

If you get a direct support slot for a major tour (or a major band such as Type-O Negative- a former RR band who I believe was one of the first on Roadrunner to go platinum), you're well known. You've got to be anyways in order to be offered that spot in the first place. And since that tour got canceled in the first place, how about I mention the headlining tour in 2005 that did really well? :D Whether or not Amorphis is a "good band" isn't the argument I am making. That's up to you. The fact is that they are bigger than most bands who have played ProgPower USA.

Yay someone agrees.

I love this year's lineup and chances are I will be going. But I mean, it just boggles my mind that so many people listen to progressive and power metal as an excuse to get whatever sounds closest to their favorite hair bands.

lol all I said was that I didn't like Dan Swano  GREAT basis for judging a large group of people.

It's got nothing to do with you, and more to do with a bunch of people who post on the ProgPower forums.

I also agree Ascension, that even though I disagree with your opinion alot of the time, you get treated like shit for no reason over there. It's a shame. There are plenty of forums that I've lurked on without posting that pretty much allow whatever you want to say save for spam. Dunno why more forums aren't this tolerant.

I don't listen to them because of that, and I understood you completely, I was sharring my own opinion/thoughts, since that is what a forum is about. Not about everyone saying the same thing, or always agreeing with everying, if thats how it was, it would be borring in here! :D

I agree that, the ones we see are like that. But I like bands because they know how to play, and sound amazing, not because they sound like band A or band B!

Err, what you're saying implies that I do not agree with you.

Meedley: It's not your comment that I assess the audience with, but the kind of comment you made that I associate with the kind of mentality they share. Judging from how much they go bonkers over these lackluster lineups, I can only conclude that they eat up generic unimportant music. Well, if they enjoy it, go to town. But I won't be there.

From what i have seen, i agree with Dubs overall. Mainly because Amorphis doesn't really seem to have the lingering appeal that most bands have. Sure, you hear a lot about them come new album time, even a bit more, but due to their lack of touring i just don't think they stick in people's minds in the "down time". Sonata Arctica, on the other hand, do. Edguy is making a name for themselves with their recent activity in america. I just don't see the same from Amorphis.

I knew I should have editied out Helloween...(I've been to every PP) I was leaving work at the time, and wanted to GTFO. All I'm saying is I was amazed at Amorphis' popularity, & I don't remember them even being mentioned previously. I also admiteed error in gaging their popularity. I was obviously not happy with the generalization, so you can disregard the rest of that post. :saint:

I wish I soundscan #'s at my disposal. And yes, there are people who I DON'T look forward to seeing there every year, but those are few & far between.
To further the "shitty people at cool events" topic. I never thought I'd be in the ER the morning after a Sy-X show, at least for something that wasn't self induced... Hope to meet you in GA this year!:headbang:

I've never been afraid to state, or back up any of my opinions there, but I have never been slagged (except for my die hard support of FK when they were announced...)

I will never discount what Mustane did for Sy-X on the first Gigantour, but
the lineup really hasn't been much to get excited about since. I WOULD like to see/hear Chris Broderick playing with Megadeth, but that's not enough of a draw for me to buy a ticket. I'll wait to see him with Jag Panzer if they ever tour again. Other than Maiden, there hasn't been a single band I care to see at Ozzfest. So it's just as easy to slag Ozzfest as it is to slag Prog Power.
