Recommend me an Opeth album please...

Blackwater Park
Still Life
Watershed
Damnation
Ghost Reveries

In exactly this order...

+1

What never ceases to impress me about this band is that while they could be considered so incredibly mainstream, they are still widely regarded and accepted wholeheartedly as one of the greatest acts of this generation - even amongst the metal elitist circles.

So, I listened to My Arms, Your Hearse and it wasn't my cup of tea..
It was to "growly/heavy" for my taste.
I'm going to take a listen to the other recommendations.

Blackwater Park is my #1. Deliverance, Still life and Damnation are also awesome, i couldnt put them in a order. I dont dislike any Opeth album really, awesome band.

I listened to some songs on Damnation and I fucking love it!
Blackwater Park and Deliverance are awesome too, so I'll buy those 3.
Thanks to an offer on Amazon I can get that bundle for 15€ :)

Still Life is their magnum opus, IMO. Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries are great albums too. MAYH to a degree, if you enjoy a more washy, dissonant black metal vibe.

My thoughts exactly, not the biggest MAYH fan here; though it's still awesome, to be quite honest I like every subsequent album (except maybe Watershed and the new one)better than it

You know.... I don't think I've ever listened to Still Life, and I'm a MASSIVE fan of everything they've done from Blackwater park on. Actually for me, Damnation is one of my favorites. That and Deliverance don't seem to be getting much love....

Opeth was a VERY hard band for me to get into. Saw them twice live and HATED them. Then somehow later when I heard Porcelain Heart, it just struck a nerve and I got everything they'd done Blackwater Park and onward. Each record grew on me in weird ways, they're all quite different. They've come to be one of my favorite bands, and I can't point out more than one or two songs in my possession of theirs that I don't love....

I love MAYH but it's definitely not the album to choose if you're into later stuff. The obvious choice would be to check out Ghost Reveries since it's the nearest neighbor.

Stop reading this message and go listen to Still Life from start to finish.

Seriously. Its fucking ridiculous.

+1 the mood it creates is something very few albums can IMO.

+2. Break out the lyrics too when you're listening to it. The story they paint is incredible. Some guy on Youtube made a vid describing it. Check it out:

Really, you can't go wrong with any of their albums. They all have some excellent songs. Some people seem to not like Damnation as much as the others, but I think it's a great album, too. It just has clean vocals instead of the usual growling.
