Opeth aren't Death Metal and neither are the two bands I am going to recommend you: Dark Suns (especially Swanlike) and Insomnium.

Hey, J Mann, I know you liked Geasa's "Angel's Cry", so you should check out another band called Belinus. They're a pretty sweet band...a little heavier. Good stuff.

Scythe (Ger), somewhat. Enslaved's new stuff is Opeth-like, but it's not death metal.

That Geasa album is quite good, as is their Fate's Lost Son, which includes 5 new songs and the excellent Starside demo.

The Belinus demo reminds me of early Primordial. I enjoy it, though rarely play it.

I prefer Jonah's Ark, Prince of the Poverty Line, and Irrational Anthems. Try Wayward Sons of Mother Earth for a thrashier sound.

I'm sure he and I will differ, and you may have heard my comp of goregrind mp3s I did a while back...I forget if you did (if not, PM me or something and I'll hook you up, but I'm fairly sure I witnessed you post...)...but here:

1. Lymphatic Phlegm - Pathogenesis Infest Phlegmsepsia
2. Catasexual Urge Motivation - The Encyclopedia Of Serial Murders
3. Squash Bowels - The Mass Rotting...The Mass Sickening
4. Neuro-Visceral Exhumation - Mass Murder Festival
5. Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition - 2
6. Bodies Lay Broken - Eximinous Execration Of Exiguous Exequies
7. Foetopsy - Dyspartum
8. Blue Holocaust - Twitch Of The Death Nerve
9. Negligent Collateral Collapse - Sick Atoms
10. Disgorge - Forensick

That's my top ten of modern/semi-modern (last 10 years or so) goregrind. Most are far newer than ten years with CUM being the exception (1997).

All of those bands are great, but here's a little description of each's sound:

1. Sick and chock full of great riffs. A hollow guitar tone coupled with excessive bass presence makes this band a huge hit for me. And awesome drum programming and pitch-shifted vox, of course.

2. Ridiculous, dark goregrind bordering on what some might call "pornogrind" (though I feel that's not really a genre). Fixated on murder (to the greatest pleasure!).

3. One of the first goregrind CDs I got into, could also maybe be considered "pornogrind" only with very little traces of actual gore/porn at all. Thematic commentary aside, brutal and churning with a slightly old-school base.

4. A Brazilian band like LP but not even close to them in sound; dirty, raw, oldschool goregrindcore. The album I listed is their only great full-length...the newest one was kind of...bad.

5. No lyrics, no melody, no song titles, no nothing, barring brutality. Pure feral goregrind at its most fucking devastating.

6. Carcass-worship with a healthy dose of retardation (in the best possible way), they abstract the post-Carcass formula with a lot of their own weird, angular sound...kind of maybe like Discordance Axis doing goregrind.

7. Every song sounds exactly the same, pretty much, but it's so worth it; twisted vocal approach (growl, gurgle, scream, belch, etc.) and plenty of slammin' riffs w/ insane bass heaviness and spastic drumming.

8. Thrashy, noisy, raw old-school goregrind with influence from ITALIAN GIALLO FILMS!!

9. NCC aren't really gory at all, but they make up for it with a dark, obsessed atmosphere and some good thematic exploration. Pretty creepy stuff, but also knows how to get rockin'.

10. Completely and absolutely the most fucked up recording on the planet, basically. Every instrument is trying to be louder than every other one, the band has almost ZERO ability to write OR play music, and the song titles, lyrics, etc. are that of fucking aliens. Absolute brilliance due to sheer insanity.

Hahaha...sorry. If you had asked maybe two years ago, I would have told you I hated goregrind (peculiarly, I was always a big "brutal death" fan though...). But really, now it's one of my favorite genres of "metal" (some will argue that it isn't metal though), and it gets a bad rap because a lot of the time it's very self-parodying. I prefer actual creative goregrind rather than silly stuff (though some, such as that Disgorge CD, are inherently silly). It's just something I'm interested in a lot. Noise, also. I could blab about both for a while.
