Norther and Sentenced are similar, but they probably won't deliver what you're looking for in terms of solo quality and such. But yeah, Kalmah is probably the best place to start for similar bands. I would also check out Dissection, CoB owes a lot to them.

Don't forget Ensiferum, but they have Norther's vocalist now, so stay away from their post-"Iron" material (which is only an EP, but that's enough to do some damage. )

Marquee Records is working on a compilation of demo/live material for Slaughter. Unfortunately I don't think he can get the rights for the other material. I'd love to see Marquee reissue Strappado.

You don't like his vocals?

They're tolerable, but he comes off as more of an Alexi Laiho impersonator than anything. Norther itself is pretty decent, though.

Back when I listened to both bands, I actually preferred the singer for Norther. I have their first two albums for sale/trade btw, as well as all of the Children Of Bodom stuff through Hate Crew Deathroll.

I listened to Children of Bodom first, so I'm more used to their sound. I love Norther's ambience, though.

I know I'd like Slaughter.

I always thought Alexi's vocals had a bit of a punkish edge to them, especially when you get to "Hate Crew Deathroll", while Petri's remained a purely metal scream.

More than likely. Children of Bodom is the reason I even know Norther, since their cover of Europe's "Final Countdown" is often attributed to CoB.

I think I found out about them through their cover of Youth Gone Wild labelled as Children of Bodom, actually.
