Obscurity and Imperator. Neither are really what you're looking for, but good nonetheless. Before the pinnacle of Death Metal.

Obscurity is good, but nothing sticks out. Really thrashy, but it seemed to lack emotion. I'll give it another spin. I'm currently going to check out Imperator.

I'll throw in these recs for obscure old-school death metal

Afterlife - Surreality
Ancient Rites - The Diabolic Serenades
Bloodstone(Swe) - Hour of the Gate
Carbonized - For the Security
Crematory - Wrath From the Unknown demo and the Denial EP
Dark Millennium - Ashore the Celestial Burden (fucking weird shit)
Darkified - A Dance on the Grave
Electrocution - Inside the Unreal
Epitaph (Swe) - Seeming Salvation (the best Swedeath you've never heard)
Eternal Darkness (Swe) - Twilight in the Wilderness (Since you mentioned The Ending Quest)
God Forsaken - Dismal Gleams of Desolation
Internal Decay - A Forgotten Dream
Megaslaughter - Calls From the Beyond
Morpheus (Swe) - Son of Hypnos
Polluted Inheritance - Ecocide
Purtenance - Member of Immortal Damnation (Finnish death/doom, you'll lap it up)
Sorcery (Swe) - Bloodchilling Tales
Traumatic Voyage - Traumatic...
Utumno (Swe) - Across The Horizion

There's alot of unknown Swedish DM in there that you think you don't need more of, but you really do. Good luck finding them.

I love the synth sound on Moontower. Awesome.
That synth use is fucking awesome. There's similar usage by Amorphis in the song My Kantele, but that's the extent I've heard of a similar sound

Anyone know any others?

I always forget about Afflicted 'prodigal sun' which is expirimental yet still rooted in the swedish death metal realms. The songs range from the beginning to newer giving the album diversity.

Afflicted is like the atheist of sweden, but with more balls when it comes to death metal.

I'm surprised Malignance left these out:

Depravity - Silence Of The Centuries
Desultory - Into Eternity
Disgrace - Grey Misery
Killing Addiction - Omega Factor
Liers In Wait - Spiritually Uncontrolled Art
Mordicus - Dances From Left

Also:

Dissect - Swallow Swouming Mass
Eternal Solstice - The Wish Is Father To The Thought
Eternal Solstice - Horrible Within [there's a third album, but I haven't heard it]
Insanity - From The Grave
Morbid - December Moon
Morgoth - The Eternal Fall/Resurrection Absurd
Morgoth - Cursed
Morgue - Eroded Thoughts
Mortem - all
Mortuary - Blackened Images
Mourning - Greetings From Hell
Procreation - Incantations Of Demonic Lust For Corpses Of The Fallen
Sargatanas - Knights Of The Southern Cross
Seance - both

There are also a handful of newer bands putting out comparable old school death as well.

Blood Ritual rules
Thanks for the rec V5:)
I'm also looking for bands that have this occult heavy metal/ black metal sound. Bands I'm familliar with:

Root
Necromantia
Master's Hammer
Varathron
Rotting Christ

Anything else in this vein?

Other old, old BM from obscure countries should have what you're looking for. Try searching the 'archives for Greek and Czech bands from around the early 90s. Can't think of many off hand. Good shit though
