Although . . . I do get all the "Reported Post" emails, since I'm a UM writer/editor/whatever. I've only ONCE thought one of the "Reported Posts" was actually offensive or worth any action taken. Of course Russell already did what needed done. It was when somebody gave out a phone number and address of a certain famous individual. Most "Reported Posts" say something like, "So and so has a signature that exceeds UM guidelines! Please ban so and so."

I have searched some of those ridiculous whiny threads looking for the reason for this cyber-revolution (OMG), and the only reason I can come up with is that Deron removed a pic of two fags in some idiots sig. What's the big deal? Do you see all the straight UMers putting hetero pics in their sigs?

Plus, it was obvious this guy just wanted to start shit with Deron. To me, it's really quite simple, if you don't like his rules, then leave. I'm not saying Deron knows all, and is never wrong, but he does run the site and helps pay for it (along with bands and zines). Quiet yer bitchin' or leave. That's my take on it.

As for SoT; I lurk there quite a bit and I find much of what is posted as very entertaining, there are some really witty people there, and some hardcore morons and cretins like Machine and nataservant (or whatever he's called). I will probably register at that new place to get some grins and chuckles.

I used to post in SOT regularly, but I thankfully managed to avoid getting too involved in most of their juvenile antics, I have no idea whether the bannings that have infuriated them are justified or not, and I'm not the least bit concerned.

Hey NoLordy. I have no qualms about how Deron runs UM. Okay, maybe Profanity's spamming fest, but I still like it here. I just think instead of people constantly bitching about Deron and bitching to Deron about how UM should be, some people should do something constructive about it. Of all the web forums I've been to, Mark and Deron are still the most liberal of all. I mean, one moderator of another forum went bezerk on me because I put "my anus is bleeding" in my user description and I had that description here before without any problems from anyone or from any moderators. I just happen to have a webserver handy and some (little) knowledge of adminstrating web forums, which includes programming, graphics, and so on. I honestly think that a lot of criticism toward Deron are unfounded and I think he's doing his job (good or bad, however you look at it). I understand Deron is running a metal community, while I run a community of assholes.

Thats bullshit i just thought of asking the DT boards opinion, yes my opinion is that the board should move, but is not up to me like i said so on the Dark Tranquillity forum i just wanted to point things out for the band and the moderator there so they could judge from themselves, and maybe get a kick out of things.

But i clearly said, many times, that i was not suggesting the DT board to move because it was a bit unrealistic since not everyone ( including band members ) would agree to do such painfully awkward task, yet one more time.

You have to remember that SoT is the descendent of the Opeth Off-Topic, which was itself descended from the Opeth forum. Some of the people from SoT are the original Ultimate Metal denizens. Most of us cling to the good old days, though it seems like MetalMan is the one who always gets shit for pining about yesteryear.

In our search for freedom of expression, we naturally attracted some of the dregs of the internet, and at times are mired in scatology, pornography, and utter nonsense. I mostly stay there because there's always a core of old-timers with whom I've formed an intense bond.

This latest nonsense with forum warring and signatures is really irrelevant except that it raises larger questions about 1) the rights of forumers (if any) and 2) the arbitration of rules. I think most of the smarter SOT members understand that what Deron wants, Deron gets, but that it's going to be incredibly difficult for him to enforce his rules fairly when so much of their respective content is up for debate (in a manner of speaking).

Ours is a nomadic board. We don't stay in one place for very long. It'd be weird to finally leave UM's servers, though.

I gave up "pining" a long time ago. I still have no problem reminiscing about years ago, because for me, it was a much better place. So in my feeble mind I believe the interaction of forumers years ago was more intelligent. So in my feeble mind I think UM has been overrun by inconsiderate people who think they are allowed to take things as far as they do for the "challenge". So in my feeble mind those who still would like a better mix of better posts are usually outnumbered by spam.

Oh well, like I've said many times - I've accepted it for I can do nothing about it. If It was my forum that I started, I probably would of never been so lenient over the years. Give people an inch, they will always take a mile. So people would of hated me for banning others. But I would of set up rules and lived by them, to keep a place that I wanted. Instead, I am an explorer of internet forums, and participate where I choose.
