Starting on the next album...

I hope that this time he will keep his mouth shut about what the new material is going to sound like so we don't get hordes of "fans" complaining that the next album doesn't sound like [something Mikael said 2 years before it was released in some random interview]. Like what happened with GR, basically.

And a proper DVD release with MAYH/Still Life material on it would be nice, yes. Infact, if they do that I hope they will completely ignore BWP/D1/D2 and focus on playing songs from the other albums entirely. Or at the very least that none of the songs from Lamentations end up on the next DVD too.

Agreed on both. I'm always disappointed when bands release live stuff that can be found on previous live releases. Iron Maiden in particular does this, what, every 3-4 years? Maybe 3 new songs and then the same shit we've heard before. Especially when the band doesn't really alter the original versions for the live show.

I agree with that mostly, but the DVD would have to have (song, not album) Blackwater Park on it, it wasn't on Lamentations and it's just too awesome of a song to leave out.

We should probably expect a very evil/dark borderline black metal album next. But yeah, we will probably get a sweet DVD sometime before the next album and as someone said earlier, I'm also really looking forward to that 5.1 mix of still life!

digressing from talks about the new dvd

Hopes for the new album
- they add more variety - GR was awsome but the whole album was in open dm, i hope they mess around with other tunnings and bring back some of their crazy metal vibes from the earlier albums. Most of the heavy verses on GR are alot simpler than what opeth used to do (GR vereses sounds simpler but its still incredibly effective - harlequin forest for example)
- and some more softer songs - damnnation style. I know not too many people like the stuff off that album but thats what got me into opeth. I love it!

just some thoughts ...

I think Mike should tour half a year or so and then start writting new stuff (both musically and lyrically). The inspiration has to be there though but if it is I would like to see an album emerge in a year or so. The gap between D1 & D2 and GR was a little to long IMO.

He should write it when he's ready - i'd rather wait ages for a great album than get a rushed pile of shite. I'd personally like them to try out a more Black Metal style, but with a more BWP style production. Ghost Reveries is too clean and quiet imo.

They'll be touring for longer than that. Hell, their first series of tours goes from June to December, and they're scheduling more after that.

Speaking of something not pertaining to this threads topic, remember Mike was bragging about gregorian chanting? Whered it go? I wanted another Bergtatt damnit!

I'm pretty sure he's referring to the part in beneath the mire thats like "holocaust scene memory." If you listen to the vocals in the background, its like a droning gregorian style harmony. Other than that, i have no clue.

but with gregorian music comes complexity through multiple vocal lines (more than 2) ... I don't know if it would be very good sounding, but it would be amazing to try ... this hasn't been done before anyway.

Your right though, gregorian chanting demands quite a lot of the listeners attention or else it's rendered to mushy humming. Probably would sound best with ambientish guitars / acoustic kinda trudging along with the chant.
