Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant, Pain of Salvation (!!!!!!!!!), Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater..

mmkay?

Also King Crimson and if you haven't, get Pink Floyd's stuff, it's funny, their popularity has made them an either overrated, or to prog freaks, and overlooked band, but I absolutely love their stuff.

well, i personally wouldnt recommend bands like flower kings, ayreon or pain of salvation right off the bat as bands to get into for this genre. Im not really a fan to begin with, nor do i think theyre very good at all, but thats probably why.

Anyway, to start off, work your way from the back up to the front chronologically (assuming your interest in this genre sticks). The following albums are essential, and available in any major record store.

Yes - Close To The Edge or Fragile
King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King
Genesis - Selling England By The Pound
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
The Moody Blues - In Search Of The Lost Chord
Caravan - In The Land Of Grey And Pink
Nektar - Remember The Future

These releases should let you know if this genre is for you or not. All of these are fairly different from eachother, but no less impactive or important....or good. You already have some camel, so i left them out. Give those releases a shot. Starting at the top, working your way down...its ordered by necessity (imo).

Not a fan of Ayreon? Would've thought you'd love those albums based on reading your other likes. I'm only familiar with "The Human Equation" so far and absolutely love it. Brilliant music and lyrical writing IMO.

I've been recommending it to everyone who likes prog music(rock and metal).

nope. the album is pretty awful to me actually.

i prefer Star One to Ayreon.

but PoS and just about everything else mentioned is stuff i'd definitely say is good. but everyone has different tastes i guess ;). anyways, he wants stuff that can easily be found in a store. most i'd agree could, but i have yet to see Andromeda or Nektar in an average record store.

imo (i wish this to be noticed) the ayreon stuff is rather uninspired and the lyrics of THE were horribly cheesy. most repeat over and over again without coming to a climax or anything. not my cup of tea!

I've told most that I've recommended it to that the story itself isn't particularly awesome or original. While I don't think the lyrics are cheesy really, it's not Shakespere(sp?) either. But the music and interplay between the different vocalists are excellent IMO...all of the vocals were done very well, even LaBrie who I'm not a big fan of.

But it's certainly not for everyone, the guy that got me into Opeth and is a huge fan doesn't like that album that much either. Maybe "rock operas" just don't do it for some.

mh, i don't know so many rock-operas but i think pink floyd's the wall (which i would consider a rock-opera) is quite good (it doesn't hold up to the earlier pink floyds tho imo)

beside: decadént named the best pink floyd album imo...i would recommend it more than dark side of the moon. but you cant go wrong with either i think...
