The Blood Alliance Review Thread

Not going to do a full review, tho might get around to it at some point

First, the bad. The UK version has got a sticker on the shrink-wrap packaging stating
"UK POWER METAL! FOR FANS OF DRAGONFORCE AND HAMMERFALL"
That's going in the bin

As for the good, plenty of them. Fantastic songs, excellent production. Musicianship on show is top-drawer and hopefully bodes well for a successful future for the band, Steve alone deserves it.

With people throwing in the fact that Crunching The Numbers reminds them of other bands, my strong impression of the song is that stylistically it's similar to recent Sonata Arctica stuff (in terms of the almost schizophrenic nature of the time changes). IMO that's no bad thing

Hoping to see the band live again soon, and get to hear the new stuff live

In the first few days after i received my Blood Alliance CD i had a problem getting into Glorious. But after a few listening i liked it more and more:)

And after a long time thinking i can say that my favorite song on the album is Crunching the Numbers. Followed by Sacrifice:)

I don't understand a bit of that as it's Germany, but why is it that pretty much anytime a metal album is reviewed people will compare with Hammerfall?

I was talking about any metal album, not only PQ stuff:p

But when it do comes to PQ, reviewers seem to compare with Dragonforce, yes, which i do not like.

There's a lot of stuff I disagree with in that review as you can imagine, but one thing in particular, how the hell is 'Crunching The Numbers' "cringe-worthy" in any way? Perhaps he has some better ideas of how a song about the UK's economic woes should be like?

Someone I know thinks the lyrics to Crunching the Numbers are cringeworthy because there aren't a lot of fantasy metaphors... which I think is the point of the song, it's not about fantasy! I don't think there's anything wrong at all with a power metal song that isn't fantasy based or have really crazy adjective-riddled lyrics... you aren't confined to singing about particular topics. If anything that would only fuel the stereotype that power metal is about nothing but flying over mountains and riding unicorns...

... and god knows we have enough of those bands.

Haha, in that case in Power Metal you can't win! The typical fantasy imagery, themes and lyrics of a lot of Power Metal is considered cheesy and sometimes cringe-worthy by many, but then there's a Power Metal song about something that's actually real, happening right now as we speak and that's also cringe-worthy?!

Some people just need to open their mind a bit!

I agree... venturing forth into Sonata Arctica territory, looking at their entire discography, that's one of the reasons I enjoy them so much! Same with Stratovarius - although they're a bit more guilty of some stereotypical lyrics and despite Tolkki not being the greatest lyricist, at least the lyrics are based in Tolkki's spiritual beliefs, so they do hold some merit. Same with the new Power Quest album... really enjoy the lyrics to Better Days, Crunching the Numbers, Only In My Dreams, Time to Burn, etc.

Nothing wrong with singing about stocks and shares in a song that's about the bloody economy

Well, it's certainly true that you can't please everyone. I for one find the mix of the more old-school fantasy based lyrics and the more reality based stuff refreshing. Not that I think Power Quest have ever been a traditional Dungeons and Dragons band.
