The concentration of opinions

WTF? Seriously man, double-u-tee-eff?!

Thrash is largely incapable of growing stale because it can be so simple. The only ways to completely fail at thrash are to A) be so dumb you can't even mine three simple riffs for headbanging goodness like latter-day Slayer, or B) be pussies like Voivod. Saying it got useless in the 80s smacks of ignorance and a complete unfamiliarity with the catalogs of Destruction, Overkill, Iced Earth and a couple dozen new thrash bands.

And what about the strides power metal bands are making under the radar? Check out my power metal thread.

Feh.

The band was hardly mentioned on the entire second page of that thread, it was just people being stupid.

Then warn or suspend the stupid people. There are alot of DM/BM threads where the first page and maybe the 2nd are about the band then after that it is just people getting stupid yet you keep those open. If your not going to warn or suspend people then just let the threads die themselves out. They almost all do eventually.

@Unfaithfully Metalhead, as much as I want to agree with you, you're totally off. GoD's been a pretty fair moderator. The BDM thread had spiraled out of control, and therefore he closed it. End of discussion. I like BDM too. Get over it.

Oh, I totally agree. Thrash and power metal are excellent genres of metal. IMO, they're far more enjoyable and 'forward-thinking' than black metal and some death metal. I'm also one for the avant-garde and hybrid genres, so I think progressive metal, doom metal, rap metal, metalcore, and the like all have immense value as well.

Nick your one of the few cool ones in GMD (I even voted for ya for MOD before i voted for GoD because i knew you were a fairminded neutral Reg that wouldnt let your musical tastes cloud your judgement by just reading your posts in other threads :worship: ) but... a fair moderator is one that gives a warning before closing anything.. Deron is a fine example of a fair moderator/admin. He always gives a warning first... and like i said earlier DM/BM threads GoD likes that end sometimes in "flames" never get closed or rarely do... closing a thread does not solve the problem of flamers(they'll just hop from thread to thread doing the same thing while we pay the price of closed threads of bands we like) it only ticks off the regs or posters who enjoy the band that the thread is about... give a warning to the flamers that the thread might get closed or that they themselves might get suspended or banned and perhaps everyone can enjoy the thread and GMD in general instead of closing a thread ...Anyways this topic is old and Deron already spoke on the subject in his own thread. As for Power Metal, I can't seem to get into it. I try to give it a listen but it's not my cup of tea. I'm more in the thrash vein but I guess that is because I grew up in the 80's when it was in it's glory and got to see alot of the classic thrash bands live back then. Any recommendations for someone willling to give Power Metal another listen? ... Maybe a compilation album or something if not then whatever is considered "classic" Power Metal albums/bands...

I agree, whats wrong with some good simplistic thrash you can just sit there and break your neck to :headbang: ? it doesnt need to be all tech. and complex all the time.

True serial killer... after all thrash is the roots of all extreme metal ... to me at least.. but nothing wrong with it neither to give a listen to once in awhile and appreciate where today's metal came from... alot of good classic thrash albums/bands out there that some people havent listened to yet because they will only listen to bands or genres of today... especially the younger generation... but anyways i said some not all people so no flaming :hotjump: ... :loco:

Check out my thread entitled "Power metal with balls." And I'm not sure if I mentioned them in that thread, so check out Running Wild and Helstar. And I'm sure you've heard Blind Guardian, but give their early stuff like Batallions of Fear and Tales From the Twilight World a listen.

alot of good classic thrash albums/bands out there that some people havent listened to yet...

Fucking A, man, fucking A. www.heathenmetal.com–download both their albums in the Media section (cheap plug, where's my five bucks, Lee?).

Out of the country for 10 weeks. I browsed the forums and quickly discovered there is nothing new on this one- same old shit.

I have not
posted a single thing on UM since last year. When I came back it was different people, same threads. Heh. Well, I am always up for good a argument/discussion about metal.

Yeah I am with you, I think you and Misfit sort of hit on something, but misfit let his own ego win out in regards to his argument(which was nothing more than his opinon)- we have argued all this shit to death and we are left with the same threads and arguments.

I dunno what to say anymore, maybe its me and my own boredom with metal.

Well I am glad we are both back Aj, where were you? I was in Greece.

I wish I was in Greece. I was at work with too many bills to pay. Internet was the first to go. Got back on my feet and bought a new PC. Now only if my band would pan out.

Misfit had a point, and I see it on this forum, but he let his opinions guide an argument that had potential. Here is something I have come across about the concentration of opinions and opinions as fact, it is exactly how I feel about this phenomenon. I post it widely and often.:D

On Dogmatism-Free and open debate is impossible unless both parties acknowledge they could be wrong. Anyone who makes their conclusions the immovable point of their arguments has ceased to reason and has started to rationalize. More importantly, they have closed down all hope of learning or expanding their views.

Obviously, I know when someone feels strongly about something it can cloud their judgement. But people who refuse to see the world from different perspectives, I.E. people who will not study both or all sides of a problem, really shouldn't run their mouth. Or at least admit that they could be wrong. Ehh. What can you do?

Misfit had a point with the herd mentality of this and many UM boards. I attribute it to the influx of young posters who are more impressionable. Which is fine BTW. That is how you learn, but being objective is not a bad thing.
