The great and all powerful religion thread!

Were you made to go to Catholic school also?

I learned a lot there, though not what the nuns had in mind. :heh:

Also to whoever said that evolution was not proven (I think ender). That is an incorrect and sadly wide held view. Evolution is an observable fact with both genetics and fossils to back it up.

A lot of people latch on the theory part of theory of evolution not understanding how the term is used in science. Dawkins has written some really good books about evolution, I'd suggest them for anyone interested in learning more about the subject.

May I ask what is wrong with being a Humanist?
Marx or Nietzsche could answer your question better than I.

Organized religion is one of the worst things to happen to religion.
I see it as being the only worthwhile form of religion, as it actually gets people to work together and get things done. Feel-good liberal Christianity, for example, is essentially equivalent to secular humanism. What's the point? If you're going to be religious, might as well go all the way.

Yay my ancestors were monkeys. Whoop dee doo. I can't express my lack of damn-giving.
Congratulations on being apathetic. Maybe you've forgotten that just a few years ago, people were trying to put "Intelligent Design" into schools and being taught to children as a fact. These are important issues whether you choose to be apathetic or not.

Working together and getting things done: in order to persecute homosexuals! http://www.lovegodsway.org

I realize that they are not "Feel-good liberal Christianity" but they are a sizable force.

OK, the education about Creationism and Evolutionism is not something I'm apathetic about. I think that children should be taught facts, the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth. So if the truth is evolution, that's what they should learn. And evolution is proven in many ways. I don't care about evolution personally, as it doesn't affect me or anyone else whether or not it's true, but the education of evolution or lack thereof is something I do care about. Let them learn religion in church, and fact in school.

I have a habit of not saying I believe in evolution because a friend of mine is a hardcore Christian and believes in creation. I try to avoid the debate with him and in general.

Stand up for your beliefs. I have many friends who are believers. If he is truly your friend he will not care whether you believe differently than him on one issue. How does he feel about your homosexuality, if you don't mind my asking?

Yes, it is, my Dad and the church I go to believes Intelligent Dsign should be taught in school because it's the "truth", they're very close-minded to science and progression.

He knows I believe in evolution, I just don't feel like arguing with him about it. He doesn't truly understand evolution either. He's the stupid fuck who said "If we evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?" He knows and accepts that I'm gay, and we're rooming together in college, which is why I'm avoiding the evolution fight... he's very adamant about his beliefs. One day when we have nothing to do I'm going to kick his ass with the truth, but not right now.

What are these personal experiences? What are your logical reasons? In what ways is the Bible accurate on so many levels? Please don't take this in the wrong way, I would just like to understand more on why people believe what they do, because this topic is of interest to me.

I don't want to write a book, and I am not that smart. But here are a few things.

Long story short my stepfather was a big partier. He smoked cigarrettes and drank a lot and did speed and stuff. My mom started taking us to church when I was probably about 5th grade. He would go to some Christian concerts and my mom's church softball games. He was usually drunk and sometimes embarrasing. Anyway one time he went to a concert drunk and speeding and ended up becoming a Christian. He stopped smoking and drinking and everything instantly. He did a huge 180 and is still going strong (I am 40).

When I was a pothead I tried to stop smoking weed, but never really could because I never REALLY wanted to. Through different circumstances I ended up going to church and ended up becoming a Christian (or, maybe going back to it). It was weird because I was somewhat resistant to making the decision. I didn't really want to change. Anyway, when I did make the decision, I no longer had the desire to smoke weed. It may sound like a small deal, but it was pretty impressive to me.

No, neither of these prove anything, but to me they are testimonies in the trial of Christianity.

Throughout history critics of the bible have cited many things that they say prove the bible to be inaccurate. But as time goes on, and more archeological discoveries are made, the bible proven to be accurate, and not the opposite.

The bible is not a Jewish nationalist book, and no human has anything to gain by writing it the way it is written.

Christianity is not like any other religion. It explains what the problem is and has its God offer the solution, and pay the price. It is not a system where you earn your salvation. It puts everyone on a equal starting point where nobody can claim to be superior.

The bible os full of ageless wisdom and insight into mankind. It is a reasonable explanation of the human condition. Man given true free will, and making a mess of it.

There is no denying that it is a quite natural for humans to believe in a "god". No other religion has a god who has made the claims that the god of the bible has made. And with prophecy and the historocity of the resurrection of Christ, it makes a convincing argument for itself.

It tells of the origin of life. Science has nothing on this matter.

The arguments against Christianity are weak.

Again, I understand that none of this is proof. But when dealing with the unprovable, one must take the evidence from all kinds of different sources and weigh it, and make a decision.

"That uppity galileo bastard is at it again, spreading his lies through the schoolchildren while they listen to Iron Maiden and thier other satanic bands... SODOM AND GAMORAH I tell you! One day God will smote them all with fire from the sky for being the sacriligious, devil worshipping sodomites the lot of them are! On minute it's the sun being the center of the solar system, then it's monkeys turning into people... before you know it they'll be telling them that homosexuality is a choice!!! A CHOICE!!! Who ever heard something so absurd in thier lifetime?

It's a good thing you and I are going straight to heaven to sing with Jesus on the golden streets, eh son!"

Your book of God - a book of lies
Your hero's death - brought us a 1,000 cries!
Nailed to the cross
Nailed to the cross
Nailed to the cross
Nailed to the fuckin' cross!

Destruction>Jesus

I do not feel that it is right to believe something based upon the outcome rather than the content of that belief.

They might as well believe that 1+1=3 and that it should be taught in school as fact. This actually reminds me of a section of the bible where it states that pi = 3. Why are christians not trying to bring god into the math class?
