I want Facebook to censor lies masquerading as news, because it's the right thing to do, and at least they can do it legally, unlike the federal government. There's a good chance they'll do it, because while making money is clearly their primary motive, their brand value (as with Apple and Google) still depends partly on the public's perception of their ethical standards.

facebook's definition of what a lie is will not be the same as yours or mine or whoever else. Their definition of lie will be centered around profit motives, if that is OK with you that's fine. It's just such a fundamental disagreement to me that there is nowhere to go with this discussion

I think this difference in reaction to threats of secession is a microcosmic example of totally different operational orientations. When the right wants to secede the left threatens death. When the left wants to secede it's fuckin Bye Felicia.

I say "jokingly" not because I think leftists secretly, desperately want conservatives to stay in the union (for economic reasons or whatever), but because I think most leftists probably have a better understanding of how secession would open the newly divided states up to increased external threats.

I remember quite a bit of outrage at all the secession petitions after Obamas re-election, and jokes about "remember what happened last time?", etc. I believe some leftists would be glad to not be associated with "dumb states" (obviously, what with the new secession talk), but I find it hard to believe they would be against secession because they feel concern for Alabama being invaded or whatever.

I don't think the concern is for "Alabama being invaded or whatever." I think the primary concern would be for the weakness of the remaining states that others have seceded from. Obviously this is a very generic concern, since the scenario itself is speculative; but I think such radical maneuvers as secession are often viewed ultimately with skepticism because of the potential geopolitical implications. I don't think that's hard to believe.

And jokes about "remember what happened last time?" are just that - jokes. You can read into them either implicit sincerity or implicit indifference.

For what it's worth, I also think that current threats of secession are not so much serious statements of intent as they are sarcastic hyperboles.

On that note, I just watched a well off black man and a well off mixed man on an incredibly popular show talk about how oppressed they are, exemplified by the fact that a rich, politically entrenched white woman didn't win an election. I've only read Coates before, but hadn't sought out any video. The rambling, incoherent, fuckinracism diatribes he pens with unsurprising frequency given the literary and media milieu now have a clearer personal context. Coates is out of his intellectual depth even sitting across the table from Trevor Noah, who no intelligent person would confuse with an intellectual (which is excusable given that he is on Comedy Central, but unfortunately no one would confuse him with a comedian either).

In addition to his ignorance and myopia, Coates shows incredible lack of self-awareness, displayed in his anger that any white person might harbor the same sort of bigotry which he verbosely spews unqualified and unashamedly. If Coates is ever accurate about white racism, it is in so far as he is a member of an instigating cadre.

Given the wildly different assessments of climate change risks within the non-scientist community, perhaps we need some sort of insurance/betting market. That would allow the climate science alarmists to buy “insurance” from the climate science skeptics. That way if the climate goes bad at least the alarmists will have extra cash to build their underground homes. And that cash will come out of the pockets of the science-deniers. Sweet!

But if the deniers are right, and they want to be rewarded by the alarmists for their rightness, the insurance/betting market would make that possible.

It would also be fascinating to see where the public put the betting odds for climate science. Would people expose themselves to both sides of the debate before betting?
