The School/Uni Thread

Yeah that seems like the best, most efficient plan. I've already put in two years, and just need a couple more anyhow, it'd be a bit of a waste to just let it all go, I suppose.

Also idk how much you make doing photos right now but that seems like the kind of business that has a lot of ups and downs and it'd suck to be stuck without any other options if your work happened to dry up suddenly.

Don't remember if I mentioned this elsewhere but Michigan waitlisted me, which is as you say bittersweet and an ego boost. It was the most prestigious program to which I applied, admitting only 1 or 2 applicants per annum, so I could very well be next in the queue. Still no word from the remaining four, but CU-Boulder is one of them.

I also haven't heard from anywhere except for SUNY Buffalo yet. Although Buffalo's email was much earlier than I was expecting, and I still haven't even received the official documentation in the mail. So I guess they made an early decision and wanted to let me know.

Hopefully I start hearing back from other programs this week, and no later than mid-March.

I'm hoping to hear decisions before Spring Break so I can go visit wherever I end up going and do some house-hunting. Unlikely though.

So, i did a serious thinking and i'm planning on changing my major from Mechanical engineering to Electronic engineering. I found out that i don't have much interest in ME. I don't do stuff in my everyday life that's related to ME, i just like cars and that's about it. But in EE, i'm actively reading news about new electronics everyday and learning how these things work. Anyway, i took a few courses in ME which i think i won't be needing them anymore. Talked to my adviser and he's going to take care of the transfer, i just need to sign a few papers and i'll be starting my new major at the end of February.

Good luck, I've never really found the attraction of electronics or electrical engineering. I don't even know why I did chemical engineering to be honest, it turned out to be very different to what I was expecting but it's going to be a rewarding career.

Same here. I don't really have any need to visit Chicago or Buffalo, but I'd like to visit Boston and/or Philadelphia, depending on the responses I get from the universities.

Thing is, my whole life i'm using electronics. Just saw how some geeks where hacking the xbox 360 kinect and i instantly fell in love how you can do anything with electronics once you know how they operate from the core.

Well, I got an email today from Buffalo; they're having graduate recruitment on March 21 and 22. Middle of the week, but it would give me an excuse to cut class, so I might take it. There are also a couple classes this semester that I'd love to sit in on if possible.

I took a handful of EE classes two semesters ago. It's definitely interesting. It's a lot more rewarding initially because you can start building circuits and test them and shit. It's also not as complicated as I had initially thought it would be, pertaining to the layout of circuits that is.

Depending how far in you are, you might consider just dual majoring man. Having an ME and EE degree is a pretty potent combination. Nothing beats Motorsports Engineering though. =P

Speaking of my major, one of my professors used to work for the Goodyear racing department, Penske Racing, and owned his own Indy Lights teams (on tier below Indy Car). He's a great guy and knows a shit ton of people in the industry and I've been picking his brain quite often. So far he was able to snag in quite a few sweet guest speakers like the Indy Car technical director, a lawyer who specializes in the field in motorsports (contract laws, accident claims, etc) -- he had all kinds of interesting knowledge I hadn't even thought of, and a huge insurance agent who runs the whole midwest district for Aflac and who worked for Indy Car for a while too. This is awesome!

I don't think the university will let me double major. I don't know though, i haven't asked. But it will be very difficult to major in two engineering programs.

Depends what I do, but I'm aiming to get into weddings, which is where the money is at, and something Vegas is good for, haha. Working on building up the amount of freelance work I do though. I.e. I did my first editorial shoot for NPR's Desert Companion magazine last month, got $125 for the assignment which was just 30-45 minutes of taking shots in a restaurant, and shooting an all day soccer tournament for $25 an hour for like 12 hours this Saturday, but doesn't happen too often...

The ultimate goal, though, would to be a photojournalist for a paper, and end up at the NY Times or something.

I GOT INTO IOWA!!!!!!

Holy shit. I'm so relieved.

Got three more programs to hear from.

Congrats Jeremy! We have an interesting symmetry going; you almost applied to UB, but didn't and I got in; I almost applied to Iowa, but didn't and then you got in.

I project meaning on the universe.

Cheers, folks. Oh and I forgot to mention that they're offering me a full ride through their 2-year MA Classics program via an assistantship. I'll say it now that even if I get into everywhere else I applied to, I may end up in Iowa anyway. The person there I want to work with is an expert on Late Antiquity/Neoplatonism and not being in a PhD program will give me time to figure out whether I want to go all the way in Classics or defect to Ancient History.

So the most likely scenario is that I will be in Iowa City the next couple years. That means I'll be 3 1/2 hours away from Chicago and not too far away from the UM Illinois gang. I'm pumped.
