The School/Uni Thread

I need to get back into school. I think I'm going to take a summer course at the local community college before starting the fall semester. I'll pick a math or science, or something I hate like that. I need to move forward with my life.

what does a goofy language nerd need math or science for?

Happy to say I got accepted to the University of Colorado Boulder. However, they put me on a "funding waitlist" so I don't feel as bad about turning them down. Iowa is not only a better school, but they offered to fund me for six years, provided I continue onto getting a PhD there.

Unless Emory can at least match what Iowa's giving me, then yes. Still waiting to hear from them. UMass hasn't gotten back, but Iowa is still a better place.

Note that Emory is about the same as Michigan in terms of prestige, and Michigan waitlisted me.

In all likelihood it will be Iowa.

Zeph, grats on the acceptances and whatnot.

Anyway, I'm still pursuing a lowly bachelors at Saint Louis University and getting raped in the process, both mentally and financially. The most annoying factor was the parking pass price increase of 30% to $250 a semester, which is fucking absurd.

Nice man, sounds like it's going well!

I'm still waiting on a few schools also; so far, I have two acceptances and two rejections, the latter being U of Michigan and UPenn. Both schools have top-ten English programs, so I knew the competition was fierce. It's starting to get a bit late in the process, so I'm preparing for my acceptance streak to come to an end.

That said, I'm very happy with my options at Buffalo and Boston; both schools offered me tuition wavers and fellowships for 4/5 years, with an additional dissertation-year fellowship I can apply for. Furthermore, both departments have great faculty, and both (especially Buffalo) specialize in critical and cultural theory, which is what I'm interested in.

A semester permit at UNLV is $50, but at CSN (local community college) it's free. I only have one in person class at UNLV this semester so I just park nearby and walk... except the one time I didn't I got a parking citation :erk:

Got rejected by Emory. Well good. I'd rather not be in the South. Just have to hear from UMass now but the deal is all but sealed. I'll be at Iowa for at least the next two years.

I've never been one to get attached to locations, so long as I enjoy the work I'm doing there, and at a Big Ten school I'm sure I'll meet plenty of new awesome friends, peers and other such people. Iowa City seems to have all the necessities of living comfortably and having a life, and what it lacks I can find in Chicago just 3 1/2 hours east where my cousin lives.

But yes, it will be a drag not having the seafood access I've so enjoyed living in New England. I'll be doing plenty of boat-trips to the lobster shacks this summer.
