The School/Uni Thread

Oh, I guess that must be the case, since we're able to communicate, as I don't know any other languages.

I admit my biased generalization of a dynamic subject such as English. I've always been interested in linguistics, so I'm solid in the grammar department. However, poetry and prose just completely turn me off (unless it's in another language to translate). I enjoyed a few of the novels and plays I had to read but most of it was bullshit geared toward a female/gay audience.

Once you take a 300 level linguistics course, you find out the "grammar" they teach in school is nonsense...in a sense. It's not the only form of grammar out there, even ghetto speech can be considered "proper" because it is a language governed by rules blah blah blah...generative grammar...transformational grammar Noam Chomsky nonsense. The linguistics course I took was pretty goddamn awesome.

AP Comp was a piece of cake test. I was in the class for one semester and got a 3 on it. AP Lit was pretty cool too. Those tests are fairly similar to how it is in college english courses...well sort of. You have in class essays...Identification tests. all sorts of goodies.

and what necuratul said was right. You read some pretty cool shit (but the flipside of that is you also read some horrendously boring shit as well).

You should all read Charles Bukowski. They don't teach about him anywhere because he's not black/gay/a woman. Bukowski is poetry for men. Anything you can find from him is great.

His topics of choice:
Drinking
Fucking
Classical Music
Women
Horse Racing
Drinking

fucking a man. Bukowski was an amazing writer. He lived in my hometown of San Pedro for the last 20 or so years of his life

What the fuck is all of this shit about blacks/gays/women? Take an 18th century fiction class, blacks and gays didn't even exist then and women knew their place.

Hey unknown, you could've worded that better. You know, like, "fuckin' A', man!" Just a bit of advice.

Unless that's some Bay Area slang I'm unaccustomed to. :zombie:

I love how in my intro to music book they pretend that women mattered in music history, and they also threw a token black composer in there.

There actually were relevant gay composers, though. Tchaikovsky for one.

So what areas of history do you plan to focus on?

Recently I've had a shitload of interest in Ancient Rome, but that's more of a passing fancy.

I'm really interested in (European) WWI - Cold War, which a little bit of the time prior to the outbreak of WWI.

How about you?

Medieval mostly - but this year I have also done Roman Empire and the Ancient Near East (Egypt and Mesopotamia).

I wouldn't mind exploring some more 'modern' stuff, but it's a bit late now as I'm already approaching the end of the 2nd year and next year is mainly revision topics and a special subject (Norman Conquest)

I was in Honors Chemistry as a Sophomore I think, and my teacher was a total dick. Fuck that shit yo.
