The School/Uni Thread

So here are my candidates for grad school in Ancient History:

Harvard
Toronto
Michigan
UC Berkeley
UW Seattle
Ohio State

I have professors and former teachers who have attended Toronto, Berkeley and Ohio State to write recommendations. I send out apps in December...

Yes, but Toronto's ancient history program is offered through the Classics department, and I've been warned against that, rather I should go through history dept. programs.

If you don't choose Harvard you're a dumbass bro. No offense.

Of course. While I enjoy history and philosophy to read up on, I don't think I would enjoy any of the jobs that it would offer me apart from archaeology.

I'm a realist, I excel at what I'm good at (which is problem solving in a more mathematical and scientific context) because it's going to land me in a decent job that I wouldn't mind being in. I can read up further on history and philosophy if I like, even though my understanding of it will never be nowhere near as in-depth as some of you.

Yeah. I figured just apply to it for the hell of it. If I get in, well, I'm set for life. I go to a flagship state university for undergrad and am near the top of the class, but not sure where that lands me in terms of the Ivy League.

Yeah, history and philosophy degrees get you jack shit. But my aim is for the Ph.D, to be a professor, so all is not totally hopeless. I'll be happy.

Awesome lineup. All good choices.

Not necessarily. The Ivy Leagues offer prestige, but there are plenty of schools (such as Michigan and Chicago) that compete with Ivy League academics without all the pretentiousness that's sometimes associated with such schools.

You've done some impressive work as far as your translations go. I think you have a good chance of getting in, although recommendation letters and personal statements really can outweigh less-than-stellar marks. Have you taken the GRE?
