Top 5 TV series that debuted in 1987:

1. Married with Children
2. The New Statesman (another great show overshadowed by The Young Ones)
3. Filthy Rich & Catflap (same as above except more lowbrow and understandably unknown lol)
4. TMNT 1987
5. French and Saunders

Classic intro!

Honourable mention to Rage (Aussie night time music show), Remote Control (Colin Quinn rules), My Pet Monster (loved it as a kid) and a big shoutout to Fox News because apparently that shitshow debuted in 1987 too. I really need to watch that Ken Wahl crime series Wiseguy, looks awesome.

5 of the dumbest-sounding band names in existence:

Velvet Acid Christ - Bryan took acid and the 3 words came to him, probably imagined those big titty goth girls wearing the velvet.

Com'nrail - How to make an engine part reference sound as stupid as possible I guess?

Fur Patrol

When People Were Shorter and Lived Near the Water

Pomegranate Tiger - I'd still be WTFing if someone hadn't pointed out that Dalí put these two items in a painting based on a surreal dream, albeit with a rockfish in between. Otherwise it'd be one desperate tiger who resorted to eating pomegranates. I imagine it'd be a bit like biting a piñata. The band's original name was arguably even sillier: Rock-a-saurus Rex.

01101111011101100110111001101001 is up there.

We Butter the Bread with Butter

Some German band names I'd like to add:

Ostzonensuppenwürfelmachenkrebs
Ackerbau & Viehzucht
Hunde Hacken Holz
Arzt & Pfusch

i had about 51k on there this year, top 5 were katatonia varathron voivod autopsy and radio birdman. fuckin’ discography rankings and song survivors are the reason for some of those lol. top song was james carr’s ‘the dark end of the street’.

Top 5 2020 practical effects scenes:

1. The Debt Collector 2: That whole alleyway fight scene that's a very obvious homage to They Live. CGI fight scenes are fucking lame and shaky cam fight scenes are almost as lame.

2. Color Out of Space: That scene where the mother's body slowly envelopes the son's body and they're both breathing weirdly as they're conjoined. I think besides the pink eyes that's a practical effect?

3. Birds of Prey: When Harley Quinn jumps on the guy's legs and breaks them while he's sitting down. Rewound that scene several times lol.

4. Becky: The infamous eyeball scene.

5. VFW: The scene when William Sadler keeps stomping on a guy's head until it's crushed into what looks like a dropped pizza.

Anybody who likes Jakprogresso/Jak Tripper check out Ancient Wisdom, it's an album that was recorded in the mid-00's and recently recovered and polished for consumption. Good shit!

Power metal was definitely my biggest blind-spot for 2020 metal (while death metal was a hyper-focus hence not bothering to list it here). Judicator's Let There Be Nothing album was the only proper (ie non-USPM) power metal album I checked out and liked.

Anybody with any 2020 power metal recommendations (or any other genre) please hit me up and enlighten me.

*NOT INCLUDING BLACK/DEATH

Lovebites - Electric Pentagram
Not exactly a pure power metal album, because it also contains two thrash metal songs ("Set the World on Fire" being their heaviest thus far), "Raise Some Hell" and "Dancing With the Devil" are heading in the direction of hard rock, "Golden Destination" sounds a bit Maiden-ish and I don't really know how to classify "A Frozen Serenade". Since they are even better live and 8 out of the 12 songs on "Electric Pentagram" also made it onto the "Five of a Kind"-live album/DVD/Blu-ray, I also recommend the latter.

Is that what you posted in the 2020 metal thread yesterday? I didn't think to check there before asking, but looking now it seems there isn't much overlap with your top fives by genre. No worries either way, I was just looking for a condensed list of shit to check out.

Yeah most of my top 10 is death metal (which I excluded here) but now that I think about it, my top 5 of all genres would be the same as the upper 5 of my metal top 10 anyway. There was a lot of amazing non-metal released last year but nothing that would crack my overall top 5.
