The Top 5 List Thread

Top 5 most listened artists in 2019:

1. Bloodhound Gang
2. Anti-Nowhere League
3. Girlschool
4. Vader
5. Black Sabbath

(Per Last.fm, where the chart gives past 365 days and puts Saint Vitus 5th for me since we ranked their discography in December. Been giving the new one a few spins though.)

Top 5-ish most listened tracks in 2019:

1. Eartha Kitt - I Want to Be Evil
2. PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love
3. Bloodhound Gang - The Bad Touch
4=. Iota - Love Come Wicked
4=. Sulfate - Speaking for Others
4=. The Stooges - Johanna

Hmmm, the year is slowly ending and it's time for top lists, I see, ok, top 5 artists apparent in the image below. I had to stretch it to 15 to get to a metal band which I thought was appropriate.

Same had to be done with top albums list:

In conclusion, I should listen to more fucking metal next year.

Spotify Top 5:
  1. Talamasca [trance]
  2. Infected Mushroom [trance]
  3. Anoushka Shankar [Indian classical]
  4. Electric Universe [trance]
  5. Coph Nia [dark ambient]

List is out of date since I switched from Spotify to YouTube Music in August. I like the Spotify app better, but Youtube has basically the same music selection, with the added bonus of being able to watch videos without ads for paid sub. The video ads were what motivated me to switch - Youtube really ramped them up in the past year or two.

Another thing I don't like about the Spotify list is that two of the artists are background noise I listen to in bed, so most of the plays logged for them I wasn't even conscious for. Pretty sure Arcana would be on the list if I could filter out the time I was asleep. I also listened to a lot more metal and barely any trance after switching to Youtube.

Top 5 beer styles that shouldn't exist and we wouldn't lose anything of value.

1) Red Ale, because nobody cares, why would you even put such malts in an ale, goddamit
2) Black IPA / or "Cascadian Dark Ale", because if I want a coffee or roasted, I go porter, if I want chocolate malts, I go stouts, if I want hoppy ale, I go IPA, who cares about fucking black IPAs then?
3) Faro, don't go fucking sweeten my lambic pls
4) Extra Special Bitter, because who even fucking cares?
5) "Imperial Pilsner", Pils with >8%abv is nonsense, deal with it.

i love Red Ales. Imperial stout is definitely at the #1 spot for me. Havent had a beer since like march or something though.

Are you talking Red IPA or Irish Red? Red IPAs are great, I love that spicy/biscuity malt against the piney, resiny hop profile.

Agree with the others though!

Yeeaa both but yeah, red IPA is really not my style. What do you think about vienna lagers though?

I am not overly familiar with that style but I don't really drink lager of any description. I might be more inclined if I lived in central/eastern Europe and could get some decent ones fresh off the tap but I'd always lean towards an IPA or weissbier instead.

top 5 tracks off the new Cattle Decapitation record, Death Atlas

1. The Geocide
2. Bring Back the Plague
3. Time's Cruel Curtain
4. Death Atlas
5. Finish Them

You really like that album.

It's not my favourite of theirs whatsoever; I'm just giving it several spins since it's new. by no means is it superior to The Anthropocene Extinction or Monolith of Inhumanity. It's third in my pecking order I'd say. Have you checked it out yet?

I never got big into the band honestly, but I've checked out their new album and it has some interesting parts for sure. Every now and then I throw on Human Jerky but that's about it.

Dont you like the style shift their embraced from The Harvest Floor onwards? The zombie "clean" vocals, more melodic riffs, etc.

Not really, they were never really a straight up grind band in the old days but I still much prefer that stuff. I even owned a Humanure shirt back in the day lol.

I really enjoy To Serve Man and Humanure, but the shit from The Harvest Floor is what really gets me going. I simply love it. However, they put too much "clean" vox on the new album, which is just overkill. They are great in their own right, but they shouldn't overuse this feature to maximum extent.

When Karma.Bloody.Karma dropped I started to lose interest, the grindcore aggression was slowly being swapped out for something else, so by the time The Harvest Floor came out I was pretty much done with the band. I do remember being impressed by the drumming and still think it's the standout performance to this day on the album, David McGraw is a beast.

The vocals were never the band's strong suit for me though, with or without the cleans they kinda suck balls. He sounded better when he just went for straight up gore.
