The Top 5 List Thread

5 favourite things about grindcore:

1. When they mix it with dance music.
2. When they incorporate groovy psychedelic riffs.
3. Dual vocals.
4. Sampling films, news clips and porn.
5. When they play the snare so it sounds like ping pong.

Switch 3 and 4 and mine is the same.

Top 5 tracks on Altars of Madness:

1. Maze of Torment
2. Chapel of Ghouls (best blast beats ever?)
3. Lord of All Fevers and Plague
4. Immortal Rites
5. Damnation

Fucking tough and I am actually note sure about it. I need Visions from the Darkside and Evil Spells on there, but Damnation is super underrated. Blasphemy is obviously the weakest for me but outside of that it's super consistent. And anyone that says Bleed for the Devil is a weak track can fuck right off. Super intense, violent and chaotic maelstrom of a track. And those leads are dizzying.

Top 5 tracks on In the Nightside Eclipse:

1. Into the Infinity of Thoughts
2. Towards the Pantheon
3. Cosmic Keys to My Creation and Times
4. I Am the Black Wizards (EP version would rank higher)
5. The Majesty of the Nightsky

Revised Top 5 Dio albums at this time since we are getting close to that poll:

1) Holy Diver
2) The Last in Line
3) Killing the Dragon
4) Dream Evil
5) Master of the Moon

...

6) Lock Up the Wolves
7) Strange Highways
8) Sacred Heart

After #2, it gets really hard to rank them. The only one easy to put dead last is Sacred Heart. Everything from 3-7 could be interchanged depending on the day. This list could change by the time we get to the actual poll. Lock Up the Wolves and Strange Highways are about even but LUtW is probably my favorite of the two if I had to pick one.

Top 5 moments on Deathcult for Eternity:

1. 2:31 - 4:05 in "Apocalypse"

"Dressed in putrefaction and gore, kings of the universe of the deceased-ahahaha! They were the main fiendish fear, they are the spirits that will reign again, they swore to return to spread the suffering, and with anxiety my heart is pounding faster, as I wait."

The way he says "gore", "fiendish fear" and the whole "oooohhh and with anxiety my heart is pounding faster" is fucking incredible and that laugh at the end of "deceased". Can't get enough of this shit. I don't even care what he's on about, it all just sound so huge and important and meaningful.

2. 3:30 - 4:32 in "In Superior Torment"

"Kill, destroy, erase all the mediocrity, uuuugggghhhhh-ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Blood must be shed with no mercy, BLOOD MUST BE SHED WITH NO MERCY!"

The way the song just collapses into this slow, doomy section is masterful. I know a lot of people don't care for those "glam" wails, but I fucking love them. An emotional tour-de-force.

3. A Portal to Nowhere. Hard to pinpoint specific moments in this song because it's pretty much my favourite song of all time but I'll mention 1:16 - 1:31 and 5:56 - 6:45.

"an infinite search of empty answers is my futureaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh-euuughhh! Left in shadows with a flickering candle, I'm entering into this portal to nowhere NOWHERE!"

Just fucking incredible.

4. 2:00 - 400 in "The Triumph (of My Loss...)"

"Where are those grey moments of pleasure.
I am the dawn, I'm the night!
I can create and destroy, I will always be the lonely walker.
Together as one fortune and misery, I'm a warrior full of hate and wisdom!"

Shit, the way that melody, barely even audible at first appears over the heavy rhythm! Fucking chills. Some more amazing vocal inflections here with the way he says "pleasure" and "lonely walker" and that scream of pure anguish as the blasting chaos erupts with that incredible riff. This is how you punctuate a song with savagery and violence. Godly.

5. 5:02 - 6:22
in "Possessed by Past Tragedies"

"Impaled in the spikes of sorrow, I have vanished. Then, I awake into an obscure dungeon where I awake just to realize that my tragedy of pleasure was just a dream..."

Just an amazing ending to the song.

Honourable mentions:

0:00 - 1:20 in "Revenge Rises/Drowned in the Mournful Blood"

3:00 - 3:30 in "No Mercy (Our Time is Near)

Top 5 tracks overall:

1. A Portal to Nowhere
2. Apocalypse
3. In Superior Torment
4. Possessed by Past Tragedies
5. Revenge Rises/Drowned in the Mournful Blood

While I fucking adore that section in "The Triumph" I listed, I don't like the rest of the song nearly as much so it doesn't make my overall top 5.

Man, I forget Magica exists so I guess by default that is under Sacred Heart. I only remember one track on that album.

I've always thought, given your general taste that you'd rank "In Superior Torment" really highly. I'm actually not huge on the first minute or so of that song even now, but everything that comes after is amazing. I think that romantic waltz-y section fits a lot better when they return to it towards the end. "A land so fucking disgusting!"

Top 5 black metal releases:

1. Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
2. Immortal - Pure Holocaust
3. Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi
4. Macabre Omen - Gods of War - At War
5. Zemial - Face of the Conqueror

I think A Blaze... is destined to remain my utmost favourite at this point. More listens of SDG's North and it might bump Zemial out, that album slayed me.

Got plans to try and focus more on black metal this year, my new year's resolution if you will.
