So, the other night a friend poses me the question: The 5 Greatest Works of Art of All Time?

I found myself struggling... how do you begin to answer that question? What defines 'greatest' - its cultural importance, its genius, or its contribution to humanity? Or simply my 5 favourites - in which case I don't think I'd be pretentious enough to assert they are the 'greatest'. And where to even begin? I can't even choose a favourite book, let alone consider all the other artistic mediums.

Thoughts, people? For the record, this question includes any form of art - novel, play, poem, song, album, composition, painting, sculpture, movie, TV show, etc.

Greatest could be greatest to you personally, not necessarily a favourite but rather in terms of influence on your life etc. In that case, the original 'Zebra' by Victor Vasarely would be one of my 5.

Maybe also Santa Cruz: Streets on Fire even though I got my skateboard relatively late in life and never really learnt to use it. The video is just that iconic.

Bees and wasps should be a protected species (apparently in some countries they are). People don't need to drink water from a tap that's been spat on, pissed on and probably worse, but people need bees and wasps.

Anyone who has been to Melbourne and not seen the Yellow Peril does not know what they are missing. It's pure art. It's bold. It's bright (unless it's covered in bird shit) and has been an icon of Melbourne for more than 40 years. Actually that's not quite correct, it's been a source of contention for more than 40 years, most people hate it, most people can't stand looking at it, only the artist understand what the fuck it's suppose to represent and it's been moved more times that the homeless bums down under the Queen St bridge.

The price we (tax payers) pay for public art in this country is a fucking disgrace.
