The Whining and Bitching Thread

 @ Ragnarutabagas

I am so pissed about how certain people cannot have an intelligent discussion with me without using it as a springboard to condescend me and try and make me feel like an uneducated oaf. Yes, I know I only have a high school diploma and you have a B.A., fuck off, I know what I'm talking about. I don't need some burnt-out hippy with a PHD and a tenure at a state university to verify my knowledge. Still, the only responses I get the points I am making is "Are you sure about that?" and "What study/book/paper/information are you basing your opinion on?", or - and I love this shit - "We'll, actually you're not quite correct. I learned through my studies that..." and then they paraphrase back to me what I just fucking said!
For example, I was having a discussion tonight about how socioeconomic status is a more important factor in divorce rates and teenage pregnancies rather than the ideological beliefs of families with these issues. And what do I get? "What do you base that on?". C'mon, really?

Anyway, I think you get the point.

Oh my god, people actually do that? It doesn't take a degree to read a library book or online news article database. I guess some people cash in for school and check their common sense at the door. That is incredibly annoying.

This. The problem is they learned something in school 10-20 years ago and just sit on that knowledge the rest of their lives.

That's stupid, the whole point of school (aside from becoming more employable with your shiny degree) is to learn effective ways of critical thinking/writing so that you can get the most out of CONTINUING TO LEARN STUFF

While that might be the idealogical goal, it is not reality.

Yeah, I've heard some unbelievable stories from people who went to big universities and state schools - like they didn't go to lectures all year and bought their papers from paper mills. Makes me pretty sad considering I actually applied myself to some degree in school and couldn't/wouldn't get away with that crap.

That is the silliest webcomic ever!

What the heck is a "communications" major? It has a rep along with business and psychology as being a bullshit major yet I don't even know what it is

at least at my college, it's now Communications Studies. They look at things like rhetoric and how information is conveyed through different media. It blends a lot of areas of gender, social, and media studies

also  at dak's comic

Psych is not a bullshit major. Clinical psychology is bullshit wishy-washy stuff. Social psych is as legitimate as any other social science.
