things you hate with a passion

Suggesting that opting to use public transportation over paying insurance & high gas prices/taxes to own and operate a vehicle somehow compromises a person's autonomy or liberty is some fucking ludicrous, shortsighted bullshit. People who seriously feel this way could only be backwater bumpkins who don't know the convenience and freedom of a transportation system that enables you to get around on your own two feet. This is not even close to the same thing as "public provision" anyway.

I'll likely never own a car again.

As opposed to town "bumpkins" who ride public transit because they aren't given enough money by the government to be able to afford their own ride?

To argue that using a personal vehicle over public transit doesn't sacrifice some measure of autonomy is what is fucking ludicrous.

I do agree public transit isn't true welfare because anyone can use it for the same price.

@cookie: Or you could get a part-time job and have your own wheels.......or wear a coat and walk ;)

I'm against government waste and all, but to complain about public transport as an example of a bad government program really is fucking dumb Dakryn. It's not like we need more pollution, more traffic fatalities and more congested cities ffs.

Well I wasn't positioning against it from the idea of waste. It is beneficial in over-populated cities. However, since most traffic fatalities happen on highways and cars only contribute a fraction of carbon based pollution, those aren't exactly good arguments for public transit.

I was more specifically addressing the tirade against people who would rather drive cars than use public transit.

I can't believe anyone in England would whinge about the public transport system over there. Granted I haven't lived there for a while, but when I was there I did just fine for two years with no car. The tube, fast train and bus system over there was incredible.

Melbourne on the other hand has a fucking terrible PT system and it's getting worse every year due to population increase in the inner city and poorly managed privatisation. And the fucking trams may have been great in the early 1900's, but all they do now is cause more congestion.

Wow. You make the United States sound good considering how much more country there is to manage over here.

And that's bad.

Yeah it's barely usable. The State government have just sacked the main train operating company in Melbourne because they've been abysmal. Constant delays, maintenance fuckups, terrible management of said delays & fuckups, etc. Who knows what the new company will be like. And the government have also just attempted to bring in a new high-tech ticket machine system which not only doesn't work properly, but is only available on trains when it was supposed to be buses and trams as well, and the tickets can only be ordered online because they haven't organised getting them into shops yet. If I was trying to use PT to get to work I probably would have gone postal by now.

I live in a city where the only public transport is the bus, and it only runs from 6 am to midnight Monday through Saturday, and stops at 9 pm on Sunday. Not only that, if you want to go anywhere other than downtown or to the 3 major shopping malls, you're fucked. Granted, population-wise it's small, but the city limits stretch 30 miles east to west. I yearn for a light rail...

I fucking hate it when you eat all the awesome Jelly Belly's, and then only the shitty ones like popcorn are left. It's like half the bag that could potentially be good Jelly Belly's.

The PT system in LONDON is fantastic. No complaints. However, London does not = England. Public transport elsewhere in the country is pretty fucking shit. I hate being home from Uni mainly because the buses/trains anywhere else are crap.

Well I lived out in Middlesex mostly and it was fine. I also lived up in Merseyside for a while and had no issues.
