But Layne contributed just as much of the sound. His voice was an instrument. Plus alot of the songs he wrote/co-wrote. He added that feeling that couldn't be there with another guy. He had real lyrics, and sang them in a way that fit the vibe...and sang them damn well. Yes, Jerry was important, but without Layne it isn't AiC. I would say the same if Jerry had died instead of Layne. They are both necessary for the band to be what it was.

I hate pretentious musicians. I'd say guitarists, but I also hate other bassists who tell me how to play my instrument. It was nice of my bandmate to bring you to our practice, but I don't care how you'd play bass in this song. I'm not you, and there are multiple and valid ways to play the bass guitar.

Truth, like when snobby finger wanking bassists (nothing wrong at all with finger picking btw, just read on) say playing with a pick is somehow wrong....is it fuck. Define wrong.It suits the music where it sounds best, and so does finger picking. They're both the "right" way to play bass.

On that level, I can't stand wanky slappy techdeath bass playing. KLAKKLAKDUNKDUNK TWANNNGNGGGGG fuck off. I fully support the idea of bass guitar taking on a melodic role, not just as rhythm, but at least give it some MELODY, not just random slapping. ugh.

Imagine how difficult it is when I am able to get head...It's a tough choice. Luckily my gf, as well as every other god damn woman on the planet, doesn't like to. I'm being serious and sarcastic...it sucks.

There is no right way to play an instrument because music and art does not know limitation, and an instrument is a mere tool for the expression of art. There are no rules surrounding an instrument, the only limits it knows are aesthetic (how many octaves are within its range, how long certain notes can sustain, grace notes, where it is tense, etc.).

That and this bassist who was telling me how to play my instrument doesn't play anything compositionally independent. He just follows the guitar and switches octaves every two bars, which is something I find pointless and boring, and often inaudible.

I think Murray Fitzpatrick of Severed Savior does a good job of incorporating slap bass into their formula. It's a little off-rhythm and dissonant and I find it pleasing to the ear. That's an interesting take, though. My drummer and I have been trying to shift our songs toward more of a compositional standpoint where every instrument (including vocals) takes an important role and it all sort of blends together. Without anyone really playing the same thing, which bores us (but not our guitarists).
