I thought it was pretty funny, CNN had a web poll asking how people planned to watch the memorial service.

Really I wanted to understand the angle of this 'hatred', which by the way seems a completely out of proportion emotion to have towards something which, in its true form, is supposed to be a peaceful and loving philosophy.

One reason I have found people to resent Christians is actually a form of jealousy. They find the world a very dark place and cannot understand how it feels to have a belief in God/gods and hope for the future. Another reason would be location-specific, if one lived in an area full of aggressively evangelizing fundamentalists. If this is not the case I see no reason to hate Christians or religious people for being so, hence my curiosity.

First of all, it was more than likely an exaggeration. Secondly, it was a blanket statement, and not to be taken literally. I'm fairly certain that V5 would not hate all religious people/Christians he came in contact with; he probably was just exposed to one specific example of how a Christian or Christian affiliation did something stupid. Most likely it had something to do with the history and image of Christianity in general, which most of us know is not the most reputable.

Now perhaps we can avoid the fiasco.

I'm afraid I do not follow your interpretation. How could one example of Christian stupidity, individual or en masse, lead to such people being the first thing he thinks of when he thinks of hatred? The same question applies to its disreputability, which is overshadowed in this regard by countless examples.
