To you, what defines "Metal"

Yes, lets. And you could pay attention, some of us are actually much more intelligent than you give us credit for.
Actually, speaking of that, what IS your problem with Swallow The Sun? I actually am really curious, I think they're pretty good. I think I need to look into Candlemass a little more before I make such bold statements, I concede that. But from the little digging I have done today, I definately conclude that Swallow The Sun will ultimately appeal to me more. Really, why the vehemence towards them?

*EDIT* And I wasn't 'telling' you anything. I just said that was what I thought. You're just as entitled to an opinion as I am, and vice versa. :)

swallow the sun to ME is boring, cliched, overproduced and overrated. they do nothing that paradise lost didnt do 15 years ago, so i dont understand why this band gets the attention it does. candlemass however are arguably the first "doom" band, and paved the way for bands like swallow the sun ultimately.

A metal (Greek: Metallon) is an element that readily forms ions (cations) and has metallic bonds. Metals are sometimes described as a lattice of positive ions (cations) surrounded by a cloud of delocalized electrons. The metals are one of the three groups of elements as distinguished by their ionisation and bonding properties, along with the metalloids and nonmetals. On the periodic table, a diagonal line drawn from boron (B) to polonium (Po) separates the metals from the nonmetals. Elements on this line are metalloids, sometimes called semi-metals; elements to the lower left are metals; elements to the upper right are nonmetals.

A more modern definition of metals is that they have overlapping conduction bands and valence bands in their electronic structure. This definition opens up the category for metallic polymers and other organic metals, which have been made by researchers and employed in high-tech devices. These synthetic materials often have the characteristic silvery-grey reflectiveness of elemental metals.

Now we can finally conclude that Black Sabbath are not a metal band, as the band doesnt meet the above criteria which define metal.

After reading your posts we can finally conclude that you are wrong.

Regardless of what you may or may not think, Sabbath are metal.

Metal has evolved and changed over the years and to say that the biggest band to cause that evolution is not a part of that genre is stupid.

Theres like 2 of you trying to argue against everyone else on here about this fact...:erk:

"Humans started off as monkeys, but I don't considers a monkey a human being."

I never said Black Sabbath aren't metal, except in the last post (which wasn't meant seriously). The point Ive been trying to get across is that as I see it genres don't have factual rules and people's views on genres differ. Personally, I judge genres by the music, not by influence on other bands, not by the times of a band, not by what the majority of people think, just what the music sounds like.

but come on, saying Sabbath, the original & genre defining metal band aint metal is just absurd

fuck some people are stupid. How Can Sabbath not be metal to any sane person?
I can't believe these people are still arguing against this..

Heavy Metal was not invented until Judas Priest released an album called "British Steel" in about 1977 long after Sabbath were known, British Steel is the first true Metal album.................All before was Blues and Rock and that is wot Sabbath are a Rock band and a bit bluesy, Heavy as hell too.......but more indie than Metal in hindsight.
but hey dont get upset over it wots a little genre mean anyway. Its the music at the end of the day init. :headbang:

Again, I never said Black Sabbath aren't metal, so what's the argument here?
