Top Ten Albums That Inspired/Touched You

Well .. the top ten that inspired me to write are :

Tool - Aenima
Opeth - My arms your hearse
Opeth - still life
nirvana - muddy banks
pink floyd - atom heart mother
pink floyd - dark side
death - symbolic
opeth - morningrise
wars of winter - s/t .. well it inspired me
pink floyd - wish you were ..

Opeth and Pink floyd shall be placed at the top ... no bands have inspired me like those..

in no particular order:

Opeth - Blackwater Park:

Is just a very emotional album that has beautiful dark riffage and the perfect mix of catchiness and awkwardness. Songs like Bleak and The Drapery Falls have moments that you close your eyes and move to... incredible...

Opeth - My Arms, Your Hearse:

A very stressing and desperate tale that has a lot of gorgeously constructed Opeth classics. The intense music and the intense storyline just add a special dimension for me.

Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane:

One of my top two tales from the concept album kings from Sweden. Another distressing story of two souls who interact and a lot of the credit goes to Daniel Gildenlow's theatrical and vivid vocals that just add something that you don't find in other bands.

Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element pt. I:

Just simply my favourite concept album as I feel so strongly for the two characters portrayed. Also, the songs have so many beautiful layers to them, I like to put on my headphones and still, after listening to it for almost a year, I find new details to take joy in.

Sigur Ros - ( ):

I was moved almost to tears (should've listened to it in privacy *sigh*) when I first heard track 1 and track 6 off this album. The Hopelandic/Icelandic vocals allows me to associate it with whatever I want to and I found some personal things to relate the album to. Also, I believe the ending of track 8 in its drumming intensity is just awesome and wonderful.

Katatonia - Tonight's Decision:

For personal reasons, I got the album under special circumstances and it just brings me down.

King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King:

Just plain and simple the classic prog rock album. Very diverse and playful and yet profound and it invokes so many emotions in me. Great album despite its old age.

This sort of chronological and a quick stream of consciousness rave but I will give it a try

Led Zeppelin 4- I heard Stairway to Heaven when I was 14 and just went wow. My older sister had it and never listened to it.

Killers- Iron Maiden- Well i was learning the bass guitar, nuff said

Back In Black- AC/DC- My Dad caught me banging my head to it one day (and I had sneaked some of his scotch) and said I was sick. Lol.

Hemispheres- Rush- I had never heard the bass played like that before. To this day the first side of that album still blows me away.

Bill Bruford/Jeff Berlin-One of a Kind/ Gradually Going Tornado- Well its Jeff Berlin!!!.

Metallica- Justice For All- Still the most underrated "industrial metal album ever released" years before their was a term

Megadeth- Peace Sells- Look Chris Poland was and apparently still a legend in his band Ohm.

Spread Eagle-Open to the Public- Glam meets progressive hard rock with a supreme vocalist. Although the cheese factor still creeps in

Obituary- Slowly we Rot/Cause of Death- Well all I need to say is John Tardy

Queensrhyche- Empire- Myself and my best friend played this album seven times in a row at his younger brothers 21st birthday and everyone was going wow this is great. That is my "you had to be there moment"

Well thats ten, but in a postscript Damnation simply suprised the hell out of me. Amazing depth and sophistication from these guys.

Is this the top 10 albums that shaped your music tastes/musicianship or just your top 10 albums?

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon; many good memories. I was in Scotland when I first heard it. Made me realise good music. Extremely nostalgic.
Jethro Tull - Aqualung; reminds me of relaxing evenings in, and I listened to it while walking home sometimes in the evening. Can't really describe the feeling.
Ulver - Shadows of the Sun/Kveldssanger; two different albums from different points in the band's time. Both albums are just so melancholy in their own way.
Iron and Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days; same as Aqualung, but chilled, relaxing acoustic music.
Explosions in the Sky - all material; I love this band. It's so otherworldly, takes me to a different place every time I listen to it. It's magical. Good music to sleep to.
Circulus - both albums; me and a couple of friends love this band. Reminds me of many good times with them.
The Beatles - Rubber Soul; reminds me of a certain short period of my life, but there are good memories attached with it.
Opeth - Blackwater Park; I love this album so much in that it depicts an atmosphere I could never previously describe. Haunting yet beautiful.
Newton Faulkner - Handbuilt by Robots; part of my soundtrack to summer 08. Many good memories attached to this album for me.

In no particular order of preference:

Guns n' Roses: Appetite for Destruction
This is the first CD that I ever bought, back when I wasn't even 10. It's the sound that started it all for me: Rock, Metal, Rebellion, Guitars, you name it, this album has it! Still listen to it eveyry once in a while and I'm still awe-struck by Slash's playing...

Metallica: The Black Album
This is the disc that got me to pick up the guitar. While I went on to discover (and love) all earlier works of Met, this album came to my life at the right moment. I might have started playing the guitar even without this one, but I'll never know. It was this one that made me do it.

Dream Theater: Awake
This CD got me into Progressive music. Nuff said.

Opeth: Still Life
Do I really need o give any reason here?

Kyuss: Blues for the Red Sun
Didn't so much touch me for the music, but for the experience surrounding it. I used to play in a Black metal band, and we used to get stoned before rehearsals, listening to this disc over and over again. It's nohere near anything Black Metal related, being Stoner Rock, but it's just got these MASSIVE walls of riffs.

Dream Theater: 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence
When this double-disc came out, me and 2 friends made a deal that we'd listen to the 2nd disc's 42-minute song only together for the first time, and it had to be while under the influence of magic mushrooms. Needless to say, the experience was magic.

Ulver: Bergtatt
I've been listening to Black Metal a while before, but when I first heard this CD, it was like a whole new level of consciousness. This, to me, is the epitome of what I like in Black Metal. I don't listen to BM anymore, but Ulver still gets put on some times...

Iron Maiden: The Number of the Beast
Hey, c'mon, it's Maiden! I could have put any one of the first 7 of their albums here on the list, but this was the first one I bought. There's so many gems on this disc...

Pink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon
Floyd fans are often said to be divided between "DSotM"-fans and "The Wall"-fans. Well, I'm one of the former. I love PF, but this CD just stands out for some reason I can't explain

Led Zeppelin: The Early Days / The Latter Days
One of the noumerous "best-of" CDs, this one got me into the Zep, and since it's a doube-disc, it's got pretty much all the good songs covered. There are Zep songs that I love and that aren't on this set, but all the ones that are are just pure genious. This CD made me realize that, except a very few rare cases, EVERYTHING released today pales in comparison to what has been done at the end of the 60s, the 70s, and the early 80s

Damn, has that been 10 discs already? Well, I had to limit myself, but this sums it up quite well, I think.

in no order

Tool: Aenima
Opeth: My Arms Your Hearse

Wintersun - Wintersun

Opeth - Still Life/Deliverance

Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet

The Doors - LA Woman

Death - Symbolic

Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor

Not in order...

Opeth: Ghost Reveries
The Cure: Pornography
Megadeth: Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?
Makaveli: The 7 Day Theory
Death: Symbolic
Porcupine Tree: Fear of a Blank Planet
Metallica: Master of Puppets
King Crimson: In the Court of the Crimson King
Tool: Lateralus
Lustmord: The Place Where the Black Stars Hang

My Opeth pick is strange. Watershed is my favorite Opeth album, and Blackwater Park was my first. But Ghost Reveries was the first Opeth album that I was able to listen to the day it released, first album that I got to see them tour for, and I have a special connection with it.

GR is definitely my 2nd favorite Opeth album, though. Just that extra bit puts it on this list over Watershed and Blackwater Park.
