Viking Metal

Lies and slander. Listen to some of the stuff MP posted!

My apologies. I'll have to check them out.

Since when does lyrics define a genre

They don't completely, but they have to be taken into account. If someone is looking for viking metal, then bands who write about vikings certainly must be considered even if they don't play the typical viking metal style.

You forgot For All Those Who Died
Good point...

Huh? For All Those Who Died is obviously about witches?
I always interpreted it as being about the Norsemen who were killed because they refused to convert...makes more sense with the lyrics, imo, but you could be right...

Since when does lyrics define a genre

Wikipedia said:
Viking metal is a term used in reference to heavy metal music with a dramatic emphasis on Norse mythology, Norse paganism, and the life and times of Northern and Central Europeans prior to the Christianization of Scandinavia.

Just gonna use this thread to ask a minor question. I've heard several people say Viking Metal itself isn't a real genre, regardless of if you think so or not, and without getting into a debate about it, what genre do people who feel it's not a real genre generally classify bands that fall into that category as?

"Burning naked but smiling
Not full of fear but pride
Knowing death alone could cleanse them
From the reasons for which they all died

For all those who died

Pleas for mercy signs of guilt
Naked bodies broken on the wheel
Tears sign the confession
With crusted blood lips sealed

Trial by water"

This part pretty much gives it away imo.
Never heard of viking being trialed by water and burning naked is pretty much the epithome of a witch execution. :>

Really all you need in this genre is: Bathory, Enslaved and Eluveitie. Tyr are real good in a "clean vocal and progressive epic way." I didn't see anyone mention Moonsorrow, not considered Viking, but pagan. I think their overrated, but you might like them.

Generally, they fall under black metal...I think viking metal simply means lyrics focused on Norse mythology and life. The music is almost always black metal, but I don't think it has to be that way...
I don't need a definition. Listen to Manegarm's latest album and then listen to Amon Amarth. Just because you sing about vikings doesn't make you viking metal. Is Municipal Waste Party-Metal?
You're obviously correct. Because Amon Amarth don't sound like some other viking metal band means they can't possibly be viking metal.
