Since I don't know Borknagar pre Quintessence, I can't compare to the two first albums. But I do know that I enjoy Empiricism more than Q.

I own all of V's albums, and I think they are great.

IMHO, I vote for Vortex for expression on albums ("La Masquerade.." and "Archaic Course" above all), and for Mr. V on live.
