Fuck off Eric. Garm with Borknagar was shit. If you disagree your opinion is wrong.
Interesting logic. This statement is completely full of profound logic and well thought out arguments.
But I love how much shit you give him for processing his vocals when Garm did it with just about every Arcturus song he sang in. You call those harsh vocals on The Olden Domain? They were whispers. A whole album filled with whispers. Garm believes he shouldn't perform live and music is personal? Bull-shit. Look up the Ulver video from 94, the fat fuck has no stage presence and vocal altering to rely on.
First off, it was Ulver.... If you're expecting stage presence then look else where. Thats not the the type of band you'd get it from, even in the early days. Norwegian black metal period... Even early Mayhem vids, you hear all these crazy stories, but they were pretty tame on stage aside from the random animal beheading. Sort of a gimmick presence.
Anyway, back to Ulver... these are the same guys that took the money that was given to them for recording Nattens and spent it on hookers, booze, coke, and suits, then recorded their album either in the forest or on a 4-track. Or a combination of both. Nothing they ever did was serious, they just wanted booze and coke.
Of course Garm uses post-processing... every vocalist does. In a band such as Arcturus, whom had a later career essentially based on their post-processed creations, it is more than expected.
And most black metal vocalists tend to record their vocals very low, as when you scream them, they get distorted. Hard to tell live, depending on the mix (thus why a lot of people like Shagrath and the like tend to mix their vocals in considerably low during their live shows), but on a record, you can typically tell if they're actually shouting into the mic, or being relatively calm and quiet.
An example of a shouter is Glen Benton. His vocals always tend to clip and distortbecause in the studio he is shouting at the top of his lungs.
In terms of "Vocal Altering", i'm assuming you are talking about Vocal range. Garms range isn't amazing, but it suffices in that Jan Transit sort of way. Vortex is not only over the top in every song, but he tends to sing every song in the same way. By the end of an album with him singing cleanly I feel like I've heard the same song 9 times, due to this. That is, until he talks... HOLY FUCKING DOES HE NEED TO STOP TALKING ENGLISH.
Vortex>>>>Old Vintersorg>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>New Vintersorg>>>>>>>>>>>>>Erics Mother>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Garm
Once again, PROFOUND!
You want to talk about bland songwriting? Slough Feg.
Hahahaha.
Lemme guess, you listened to one song on myspace... I'm going to say Tiger, Tiger, considering as it was the first song that would play up until about a week ago, and your judgement was based off of that.
