Assault-weapons ban set to expire

By Stephen Dinan
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

The assault-weapons ban, passed 10 years ago to prohibit the sale of some firearms, will end next week, and Congress will not move to extend it.
"It will expire Monday, and that's that," House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, Texas Republican, told reporters yesterday.
Some police chiefs were in Washington yesterday to lobby for extending the ban, but did not sway congressional leaders, who said there is no room on the schedule. In addition to Mr. DeLay, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Tennessee Republican, said the Senate would not consider a renewal.

"I think the will of the American people is consistent with letting it expire, so it will expire," Mr. Frist said.
The ban, which applies to a list of specific firearms and "copies" or "duplicates" of them, could be restored later. But for now its lapse is a serious blow to gun-control advocates and a victory for gun-rights groups like the National Rifle Association, which made stopping the renewal a top priority.
President Bush has said he supports the ban, but has not put any legislative muscle into pushing for its renewal.
His Democratic opponent in November, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, supports renewal as well, and gun control — and the assault-weapons ban in particular — polls well among voters. But gun-rights supporters are a loyal and sizable voting bloc that both parties are courting in this year's presidential election.
Mr. DeLay said the ban was "a sham that never worked" to reduce crime, and has served only to make sales more difficult for manufacturers. Some manufacturers have made minor adjustments that allow them to sell firearms similar to those on the banned list.
But the ban's supporters predicted that the firearms now will become more readily available.
Democrats, in particular, urged Mr. Bush to push for the bill, though with varying degrees of enthusiasm.
"In his 2000 campaign, President Bush specifically pledged to renew the ban. But now, as the ban is about to expire, the silence from the White House is deafening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat.
But Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, a South Dakota Democrat in a tight re-election race in a state with many gun-rights supporters, responded to reporters: "I would just say I agree with President Bush: We ought to re-extend it."
Mr. DeLay, though, said the president doesn't factor into what Congress will or won't do on this issue.
"If the president asked me, it'd still be 'No,' " Mr. DeLay said.
The Senate voted in March, 52-47, to extend the ban as an amendment to another bill. But that underlying legislation failed to pass.
In the House, Republican leaders have said all along that there simply aren't the votes to pass the measure. Because of that, Mr. DeLay said, he will not bring up the bill.

shit, i didn't know about that :yuk:

you reminded me of the day that i said to thomas we had like 3 or 4 serial killers throughout the history of brazil, MAX, and he was totally amazed
but thats bullshit. We dont had nearly as many serial killers as US, but we had MANY more than 4!!

I think the worst was the one in Porto Alegre, around 1860. He was a butcher (literally, i mean, he owned a meats store). He used his german wife to attract men to a house, where they both would kill the man... and USE THEIR MEAT TO PRODUCE SAUSAGES!!! And they SOLD the sausages to the public. In fact, the sausages made of menflesh were VERY popular... until the police discovered the murderers and what they did with the meat (if I am not mistaken, the couple also ate some bodyparts).

I guess Porto Alegre population didnt eat sausages during some decades after this whole thing was discovered.

alguns seriais killers brasileiros:
Marcelo Costa de Andrade, o vampiro de Niterói (Niterói´s Vampire)
Francisco Costa Rocha, o Chico Picadinho (Chico Minced Meat)
Francisco de Assis Pereira, o Maníaco do Parque (Park Maniac)
Maníaco do Cassino (murdered 14 people in Cassino beach, Rio Grande city, RS)
Osvaldo Sônego (kidnapped, raped, impaled and killed 6 kids)
Cirineu Letang (militar police that killed 6 transvestites)

there are many more, but here in Brasil most cases are not that much divulged by the press, specially before the 80s. Also, I dont doubt many crimes are lost in the huge quantity of killings in Brasil resulting from "regular day to day" violence.

dude, you're blowing this WAY out of proportion

Why is it that the Americans here don't think this is a big deal but others think it's fucked up? No offense to anyone and I'm not trying to stir any controversy here, I just find it odd.

all it means is that now i can go to the store and get an M16, but i dont want one. i will end up getting a small handgun though, first i need to ask the cops how to shoot one though. . .

"i think they make alll bullets cost 5000 dollars. think about it, people would think twice before shooting someone, 'man he MUSTA done sumtin. . .he just put 50,000 dolla worth of bullets in his ass.' and you wont have to go to the hospital afterward either, cuz whoever shot you is gonna take their bullet back 'I BELIEVE YOU GOTS MY PROPERTY.' 'man i would FUCK YOU UP, if i could afford it. imma get me another job, start saving and you a dead motha fucka.'"

Just because the ban is going to expire doesnt mean you can just go out and buy anything you want. There are still going to be waiting periods, background checks and the like....so you dont have to freak out. Besides, you dont live here, I dont know why this is affecting you as you are allowing it to. No matter what bans there have been, these types of weapons have ALWAYS been able to get into the wrong hands...its like the "war" on drugs campaign...there is nothing that can be done to end that...nor will there be an end to the issue on bearing arms..as long as there are people out there with different opinons, it will continue.

@ Chris Rock! How true.

I dunno. I mean dont get me wrong. I think we have ALL imagined at one point or another walking into a place with an automatic weapon and a bunch of dynamite when we are pissed. But most of us dont go and DO it...

I dunno though. I guess one way of thinking about it if they are ALL legal and anyone can get them, i guess the playing fields might be more level. Right now, if one joker has one he's gonna cause a lot of trouble, but if a guy walks into a quickie mart with a pistol cos he cant afford a big gun and the old man there whips out an M16, he might think twice about robbing it. :D

^true! Or maybe they will think twice about breaking into someone's home to rob them (or worse)...because now homeowners can protect what they worked so hard for and their families. I dont think there is going to be this massive surge of people buying these weapons. I really dont think so.

the only people that really need those types of weapons are BIG game hunters, but why would they get an automatic, it would rip thier "trophy" to shreds. and home owners would more likely buy a lorger caliber pistol then a small uzi, and a m16 is really too much for simply home defence. there you have theat guy from tremors, who is off the wall with the firepower, but to each their own, i need to figure out how to shoot a regular gun first.

I guess my way of thinking is that yeah; i can learn how to shoot a pistol first which requires aiming, or use a 12 gauge or M16 for my home defense. Sure I'd put some holes int he wall but I'll eventually hit the bastard that breaks in! :p

But yeah, I mean...when you give out big guns, everyone gets them, and while you know a person can take a few pistol shots before going down unless its a dead on shot, not many people can take a buttload of hits from an automatic weapon, i'd rather face someone with a 9mm than a burst fire shotgun that's for sure.

i want one of these

an M16 bullet can transverse your wall, the neighbours wall and kill someone inside another house!! Its not used for home defense!! You dont defend your home with M16, mortars, land mines or nukes! You use handguns, pistols...

Not only that, but the most probable thing is that if any outlaw discover you have such weapons, he will try to take advantage of the first time he knows NOBODY is home to STEAL those weapons and use them to criminal acts!
