What's with the Opeth backlash??

I'm not even wasting my fucking time on this thread anymore, holy fucking shit. You're all dumb as bricks.

I'm going on 19 & have owned slayer cd,etc.. since 12. No way opeth is a gateway band. If hearing the band when first getting into metal I would have thought they sucked dick. I'm also a lot more mature of a guitarist so I think to a certain extent that reflects my music taste now. I also use to wear metal shirts all the time rarely wearing them now. It's not about 'metal' but music.

Gateway bands

slayer,sepultura,cannibal corpse,fear factoryetc....

cannical corpse a gateway band?

your young age is reflecting in your posting dude. get to be a bit older and you'll wisen up.

So you're trying to tell me 50% of cannibal corpse fans do not consist of 13 year olds that got into death metal or metal through cannibal corpse or other accisible death metal bands. How would cannibal corpse not be a gateway band ?.

Don't forget about the bands 'image' either.

oh did he say entry level EXTREME metal band or just entry level metal band? if he said entry level "extreme" metal band show me where.

He didn't, I did. In fact, I did so many, many posts ago, and if you're going to continue making the same arguement over and over, you should at least disprove the other arguements that've been made already. It's common discussion ethics.

I completely agree. They are quite well-known and popular amongst death metal, not to mention a number of their fans are relatively young.

Wow. I read the first half of this thread and it was interesting but the second half of the thread has just thrown me for a loop.

I think the problem is that metal fans are negative people which is both a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing because negativity makes for some of the best metal ever - since the days of Sabbath, that's one of the defining features of metal. It's a curse because this negativity makes the fanbase a fickle crowd.

Personally, I'm usually more indifferent than outright negative. The only exception I can think of (off the top of my head) is Metallica.

The best-selling band in death metal, according to Terrorizer...

Yeah this thread turned to shit quick, what a surprise. As stated above that is one of the curses of metal and its fans alike it always seems to be all or nothing - no middle ground. I personally like Opeth alot and am curious as to all these other bands people keep mentioning that are similar but better - please enlighten me, seriously I am always open to more music. I like the clean to heavy and back aspect of Opeth and have yet to find much that can compare. The straight heavy metal Opeth is just that metal, is their better or different? In my opinion yeah sure their is always better than something on any given day. I am just glad I do not let what others think of my music determine my likes and dislikes.

I'd like to see a list of bands whos catalog, on the whole, is better than Opeth's. There'd be very few candidates. Good extreme metal bands have a habit of producing one GREAT album and then dissolving, putting out crap, etc. Opeth's stuff from Orchid - BWP automatically makes them one of the most consistent acts in metal, ever. 5 classic albums. I can't think of too many other metal bands besides maybe Enslaved, Devy, and Ulver that could claim that. If someone wants to present a list, that'd be great.
