Who is the future of metal?

In my opinion, I believe Opeth to be the big band of the future, the band that headlines all the big festivals and has the fans still coming back, like Maiden or Judas Priest are now, I wouldn't really say Iced Earth are the future, they are big and popular now, they are great but not the future, I believe their best work is behind them.

In Flames are old now, they are not the future, they were good for like 2 or 3 albums, In Flames are the past.

if your wanna hear the future of metal go to Spiral Architect's "A Sceptic's Universe". that is the craziest shit i've, and i can safely say anyone will ever hear. it is technical, intense to the point of border lining thrash, and the musicianship! they combine this crazy jazz fusion with this off the wall technical metal and throw in so many strange time changes...its mind blowing!! if bethoven or mozart were alive right now and played guitars, this is what they would write. Spiral Architect is not only the best metal band out there right now, they're are also monsters of music theory. you won't find boring repetitive downtuned riffs here cuz its not even riff based!! its fast and everchanging progressive metal that never repeats itself and the kyrics are very deep, no "its been awhile" shit here. just a couple of real musicians playing metal conveying the message to question society and to search for truth in a world built on lies...in other words; to be skeptical. throw away all your metallica and megadeth albums and go buy spiral architect right now. you won't look back.
they're good, not that good. And no, its not the craziest shit anyone will ever hear. Check-out Spastic Ink. Spiral Architect doesn't really compare...

When a new metal band tries something other than being more hardcore or goth. We will have a winner.

But in the close future only the old bands are trying to make something.. they are pushing the carrocel. So there will be no BIG thing.
Since the early nineties there's not a leader of the genre. And it's not coming anytime soon.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if Opeth made a comeback and wowed us all so much that they become the forefront of the underground again like they were after BWP.

I think In Flames are finished, personally.

Mainstream-wise, I'm not sure. None of my hopefuls did anything. Mudvayne, Godsmack, Disturbed, none of them made a big impact at all with their new albums, so it looks like the airwaves will have White Stripes and Simple Plan for a while.

This is an excellent thread. I have no idea who will be the future of metal, but I think the man that has the best shot is Dave Grohl- he has the contacts- Probot if given any press may do really well. I like Queens of the Stone Age( although he is a guest)- i they get a little heavier, who knows how popular they could be. Same goes with the FOo Fighters.

I just dont see a real metal band becoming the next big band. The music industry at the present time is not conducive to backing a talented metal band. Look around at the big metal bands at this present time- besides SOAD i dont think one of them has any talent at all- why should we suspect that this will change?

Because the bands read reviews, and realize how stagnant they and their peers are. So they'll start to incorporate leads, double bass, solos, mellow tracks, time changes, and stuff like that.

See: Papa Roach, Disturbed, Chimaira...

Although you might not like those bands, notice that they'e trying to evolve their sounds for the better.

Ya, either Opeth or Katatonia since they are more accessible and not to chaotic for the "mainstream." It has already started to occur for the both of them.

I wish it could be more abrasive bands such as Vehemence, Vital Remains, Farmakon, etc...but that will never happen unfortunately since the majority of the population cant handle it but one can always dream.

I think that Blind Guardian, Iced Earth and Nightwish will be huge leaders of heavy metal in the near future. If you think about it I can't be too off with Nightwish. Look at a group like Evanecense. Take them away, replace them with Nightwish, what you get is a powerful heavy metal band with an attractive front woman who can sing her ass off. It will definetly grab attention. Blind Guardian and Iced Earth are just great at what they do and are very popular already. I can see their popularity growing even more and gaining more and more fans.

While I think those will be the three main bands there will be tons of other bands who gain more popularity as metal moves on. In Flames, Opeth, Nevermore, Dimmu Borgir, Children Of Bodom, Stratovarius, Primal Fear, Hammerfall, Gamma Ray, Edguy. Most of these are European bands. Much like we had the new wave of British Heavy Metal, I think that the new wave of European heavy metal isnt too far off.

Then you have the leaders of the past like Judas Priest who are now back with Rob Halford. You can bet they will give this reunion a strong run and before they eventually call it quits they will do all they can to help gain metal some ground wherever they go. You have Iron Maiden in Europe touring with Gamma Ray and possibly bringing them to the USA, that will gain them so much exposure and it will all be a chian reaction for other bands to follow.

Then you have older bands who are not getting any younger but still out there kicking ass who can go on and draw some pretty big crowds like Testament, Slayer, and more.

I see metal going up if anything just keep an eye out on it.

The future of metal is in all the great bands that either headline or are high on the bill for all the massive European festivals every summer. Clearly something is happening and the European countries are at the heart of it. Not only because of that fact, but more importantly because of their talent. Also, I strongly feel that the Power and Prog metal bands in particular are at the forefront of metal's future because those bands use so many elements and sounds, as well as orchestrations, to create their music. Power and Prog metal bands have a knack for finding a balance between heaviness and melody, integral parts to metal. Some of these bands have been around for a long time but that does not mean they are not still making great music.

Those leaders: Stratovarius, Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Gamma Ray, Grave Digger, Running Wild, Symphony X, Seven Witches, Hammerfall, Nightwish, Rage, Helloween, Angra, Edguy, Dimmu Borgir, Nevermore, Evergrey.

I hope that the future isn't Nu-Metal, I think someone suggesed SOAD as the future of Metal, if that's the case I'll stay in the past, the dark grim past.

I don't think Opeth are becoming more commercial, their last album was part of the "2 albums actually been one album" concept, apparently, Damnation and Deliverance are supposed to be enjoyed together, if people see Damnation as "commercialising" then I think they are sadly mistaken.

My ideas for the future of Metal:
Opeth
Nevermore
Agalloch (hopefully)
Nile

Hard to judge what the topic is about, is it commercial success or just plain old fashioned greatness?

N*Flamz will sell lots of records, but the nu sound is terrible, but it sells.

I see the future the same as it is today, awesome bands that are never appreciated by the mass, and commercial money hungry whores producing tired worn out, watered down shite.

At the end of the day, nothing changes

Things will get better...

I can feel it.

Who says things are bad? We have Children of Bodom, Opeth, Shadows Fall and In Flames to take over the mainstream of metal (not the pop mainstream) and all of those bands kick fucking ass.Hell, even if it was SOAD and Disturbed to take over I'd be happy. Stop yer bitchin.
