Who is the future of metal?

I don't think Opeth are becoming more commercial, their last album was part of the "2 albums actually been one album" concept, apparently, Damnation and Deliverance are supposed to be enjoyed together, if people see Damnation as "commercialising" then I think they are sadly mistaken.
I've always found this view rather ridiculous, practically. HOW, at all, are you meant to enjoy the two albums as 'one artistic whole' or whatever?

Play track 1 from De and then 1 from Da? Get two stereos and listen to them together? Listen to one and then the other? Are the two in any way conceptually linked by music or lyrics, or other than by the artwork?

Short answer....NO!

They're not two parts of one whole, they're just two different albums Opeth wanted to release together.

[ed] Having one 'heavier' and one 'softer' side isn't a link at all...considering that Deliverance isn't really much heavier or different than any of their other normal stuff.

swedish bands will lead the next generation. with bands like arch enemy and shadows fall getting HUUUUGE recognition in the mainstream metal world i have no doubt in my mind that it will be the next trend.

actually... *ponders*... its allready starting to happen, if you listen alot of metalcore you can hear the influence. but i think the swedish trend will become more and more apperant in the next year

I think on the Opeth topic, the point is, if you enjoy Opeth anyway, why do you like them, I personally like them because they mix Black/Death/Doom Metal with cool Prog Rock.

Then why not enjoy them seperately, I believe this touches on the musical diversity thread as well, it is an experiment.

I honestly don't believe Opeth are "Selling Out"

Listen to Harvest from Blackwater Park, that sounds like a Damnation track.

And besides I believe the two albums are link musically, the two elements of Opeth's musical spectrum have been polarised and seperated, the musical link I thought would have been rather obvious to spot, the song for both albums were recorded at the same sesions and I assume that the mellow parts are somehow the "Missing Pieces" of Deliverance or alternatively the Metal bits are the missing pieces of "Damnation"

Opeth are a lot cleverer than most smelly teenagers. If someone doesn't "get it" then that is hardly Opeth's fault.

I feel that the future of metal bright. The few bands that come to my mind right now are...
Opeth
Nevermore
Soilwork
Inflames
Dark Tranquility
Arch Enemy
Children of Bodom
etc

Stuff that has already been mentioned.

But it also won't be long before these bands(if they ever go mainstream) some fans start complaining that they have sold out and aren't tr00 anymore. In fact, there already so many of them now...

Maybe metalcore is the future- I know the latest Dillinger Escpae Plan/Shadows Fall/ Poison the Well tour did pretty well in my city- metalcore offers something new- as opposed to the stagnant power/traditional/prog form of metal that so many people on this board are endorsing. One thing is for sure- black metal and death metal dont have a shot- Mudvayne is the heaviest thing that any radio station will put on the air these days. Although you never know with Dimmu and Cradle- they are getting more and more popular- I just cant see them getting mainstream appeal.

Progressive rock/metal like Spiral Architect, Dream Theater, Spastick Ink etc will never taste the mainstream air mainly because their music is barely catchy and too complex for mainstream critics/music listeners.
Sure Rush and Yes were popular in their time, but I doubt it was as fucking wanky as alot of prog rock/metal these days. I still like it for it's technicality, it's just not too light on mainstream ears.
