Who were the first Death Metal band?

I don't know I was only about 7 then!

I've read loads about metal's history and I remember reading that Tom G Warrior was the first guy to do the "death grunt" vocals - which means Hellhammer/Celtic Frost were the first death metal band. Not sure about albums.

"Scream Bloody Gore" by Death must be in there somewhere.

Celtic frost influenced death metal- but I wouldnt call them a death metal band.

Lets not forget Slayer- they were by far the most extreme band when they released their debut.

Possessed is probably the first- I think they formed in 82. So that beats Sepultura by 2 years.

I'd say Death, they didn't release Scream Bloody Gore until '87, but they were around doing demos since '83.... and as for posessed, I would say that they are more of a transition towards death from thrash, but not pure death metal. For just plain pure death metal, I would say death.

I actually thought you'd made a decent thread for once then you come out with a statement like that. Are you taking the piss or what? I've seen people flame you for stupid statements in the past but this one takes the fucking biscuit.
