Death have also been playing since '83. And although Scream Bloody Gore didn't come out until '87, it was much more "pure death metal" then those other two. The others were kinda transitions from thrash to death.

Could we call Venom the proto death metal band? They really started a whole trend towards black and death- but Ive have Venom's Black Metal and well I can barely take it- and it sure isnt all that technical like death metal. This is just a question for anyone that can answer it.

Celtic frost influenced death metal- but I wouldnt call them a death metal band.
I'd say also Sepultura 'cause I'm not into Master/possessed ....

Lets not forget Slayer- they were by far the most extreme band when they released their debut.
Let's not forget about Venom ....

Yeah, I think before you say who the oldest is, you have to define death metal as a genre first. What seperates it form other forms of extremem metal? I'm not big into the metal old school so I wouldnt nknow the answer to the thread topic anyway.

Death, grindcore?! hahahahahaha. Profanity, you really are a moron.

There were a lot of bands that influenced death metal, but I'd also say Death was the first. Not for Scream Bloody Gore, but for their demos with Kam Lee on vocals.

The first bands in the genre in my opinion was Blood,Massacre,Morbid Angel,Obituary,Repulsion,Necrophagia and Autopsy.
