Dream Theater might be more technical than other band in the progressive genre though. I haven't heard much progressive metal.

There's kind of misunderstanding amongst youngsters these days as to what progressive music is. Somehow everybody has started to associate technical bands with progressive music. If you can get your hands on Terrorizer issue 101 (I think), they give a great explanation for why bands like Opeth and Arcturus are progressive, and why bands like Theory in Practice are technical.

Blind Guardian
Angra
Edguy
Gamma Ray
Stratovarius
Rhapsody
Elvenking

I'm not sure if you're familiar with any/all of them but they are all quite distinct and at the top of their league. Granted - they were all spawned from Helloween, and of course Iron Maiden, but they have their own evolved trademarks now.

Of course I respect your opinion if you don't like power metal, and indeed there are a lot of crap power metal bands that sound so 'formulaic', but I thought I'd provide some thought on the matter.

P.S. I purposely did not list Hammerfall - I think they contribute very little to any genre, let alone power metal. Just my opinion though.

I'll admit I listened to Helloween when I was around 13, and I still don't mind listening to them once in a while. I will always love Iron Maiden, though. They are more traditional metal than most modern power metal bands. My favorite genre is Noisecore . . . that's about the extreme oposite of power metal. So that's where I'm coming from. I'm very open to all styles, though. Blind Guardian is respectable.

I voted power metal. Guys in tight leather and spikes that look 40 singing cheesy "I'm a metal warrior" lyrics doesn't do it for me.

Fair enough, but there is a whole slew of bands that consider themselves to be progressive: Dream Theatre, Pain of Salvation, Ark, Spocks Beard, Reading Zero etc

None of them sound like Opeth or Arcturus, and I wouldn't say they're technical either.

Seems like another category might be needed perhaps? Whatever it should be, it gets my vote.

Funny because that description sounds like Black Metal to me.

Come on - not all power metal is like that. I hate Manowar and Hammerfall, but I like Blind Guardian and Edguy. I guess though the bad overshadows the good.....oh well.

Other than Immortal, most of the "big dogs" of black abandoned the corpse paint.

For the record, I like Immortal :)

Corspe paint perhaps, but what about the leather and spikes (and oppressed closet homosexuality)! Oh how "Lords of Chaos" belittled the genre so....

LoC just said Euronymous was gay and truth be told, I don't even like Mayhem. Also, this was also heresy from none other than the biggest liar of all, Varg Vikernes. But that's history...

When it comes to leather and spikes, name me some real quality black metal that still wear that stuff, other than Immortal.

Aren't a lot of power metal musicians gay? Rob Halford?

It has to be Power Metal. I really liked Blind Guardian but after a while this whole genre is kinda strenuous for me, just too much power and everything, the eunuch-like voice :Puke:

Yeah I was just kidding in my defence of power metal. I stooped to a low I admit it.

Having said that, Lords of Chaos does depict a whole scene of very unstable oppressed children - it does nothing for the image to promote it under an "evil" banner if that's how black metallers might have perhaps hoped. It's actually very sad in reality.

God knows - I'm just working from the same stereotype you used for power metallers. Stop making me laugh, heheh

Rob Halford is power metal?!! :)

OK putting image aside, you should check out the album "Heathenreel" by Elvenking. It does fall under power metal, but they incorporate several different music and vocal styles within their music: folk, celtic, melodic, and even death/black. You'll never associate them with crap like Hammerfall, but somehow they all get linked together in the same heap.

It seems most people here have a gross misperception of what power metal really is.

To be fair, most people think of furry loin cloths and swords when they think 'power metal'. For every good power metal band, there are 10 that are really really bad, and living in the USA means we don't even get to hear about half the shit that comes out of the German or Italian local circuits.

That's what makes ProgPower III so incredible - you've got all the best power bands in one weekend, and it's their first time in the USA to boot.

I voted for grindcore.

Firstly I want to clear something up, prog metal bands are only prog if they are doing something original and unusual. It usually consists of technical displays and unusual song strucutres but it doesn't always. Many bands that have been labelled prog such as "Vanden Plas" are certainly not progressive because they are complete rip offs of DT. DT however are prog in my opinion, "Images and words" and "Awake" were very progressive.

Also who ever said that Pain Of Salvation isn't prog had better listen it again because I don't know how else you could categorise it. Along with Opeth and Tool, Pain of Salvation is amongst the most original sounding prog metal bands around, POS sounds rarely sounds like Dream Theater or any other metal band.
