Iced Earth and power metal very intresting, personaly I would call them more of a progressive power/melodic metal but thats me, any way I voted metalcore although it is different and unique, its my least favourite of that lot.

npearce was totaly correct to put Opeth under progressive to, I class them as progressive death metal along with Edge Of Sanity etc so I'd say he was 100% correct in my opinion.

How you can all hate power metal I dunno but thats you lot I guess, tend to find most hate it because of Manowar and their cheesey on stage gimics but to me they are some of the greatest musicians in the world!

And to the guy who voted brutal death metal good call  although Nile and Cryptopsy are good bands, not so much a Nile fan as some know hehe but Cannibal Corpse is a prime example of how annoying brutal death metal can be some times.

:) We Know! Stop Reminding! Yeah, though, Cannibal Corpse and Six Feet Under have never been acts that got my attention in the least. Not saying the're the same, they just don't have what Cryptopsy, Nile:grin: and Krisiun have going for them.

By the way, what would Children of Bodom be classifed as?

Also who ever said that Pain Of Salvation isn't prog had better listen it again because I don't know how else you could categorise it. Along with Opeth and Tool, Pain of Salvation is amongst the most original sounding prog metal bands around, POS sounds rarely sounds like Dream Theater or any other metal band.

Nobody said Pain Of Salvation weren't progressive - on the contrary, I said that they were progressive.

The arguments around categorization are bullshit because surely it is the bands' right to categorize themselves. If Vanden Plas class themselves as 'Progressive', then the fact that they are DT rip-off's is neither here nor there.

My only point was that there is a category recognized as "Avante Garde" and it is certainly NOT the same as "Progressive" in my mind. Arcturus, Winds, Agalloch, and Opeth are too good to be lumped together with crap like DT, Vanden Plas, Yes, and Royal Hunt (IMO).

It doesn't even need to be called "Avante Garde", just as long as there is notifiable segregation.

In the same way, it's also unfair that great bands like Blind Guardian and Angra suffer for their categorization because of the likes of Manowar.

Anybody dismissing Metalcore, Noisecore, and Grindcore as anything other than metal is being closed-minded in my opinion. These genres are simply pushing metal in new directions that the "average" metal band isn't.

Children of Bodom is power metal with raspy vocals.

I guess this goes back to my point how many different bands there are in one category....Bolt Thrower, Morbid Angel, and Nile are all "death"?

Either way, I love 'em.

You can say the same thing about NU-Metal...

Anything with "core" at the end. hardcore, grindcore, noisecore, metalcore.. eww.

I agree with you there,
I voted for Metalcore...

I thought about voting for Power Metal 'cause I really don't like this genre in general, but Blind Guardian is probably the best band ever, so I couldn't vote Power Metal...

And Blind Guardian dress like perfectly normal guys...
