Your latest G.A.S. purchases

Well I did build the cab to the same size specs listed on Mesa's website using Birch (the oversize cab that is). But ya, I'd like to get me some V30's. Closest thing I've got to V30's is in my other cab which has Warehouse veteran 30's. I'll get some clips up soon!

The cabinet she's sitting on is one I built loaded with some older Electro Voice speakers that can handle the low end. I've also got a pair of small block speakers that I will be building a 2 x 12 cabinet for in the near future.

Just bought some really cheap 2 channel usb interface (swissonic easy usb) for 29,90€ new.
I just wanted to test it and wanted something to play guitar with my laptop and stuff.
It actually works pretty well, had no problems with Win7 and Reaper with it, installed it in like 2 minutes,
just what I wanted and I thought it's just shit and I am gonna send it back :D

So, I've been thinking about getting a strat of some sort for quite some time now. I've been wanting to add that single coil vibe back to my collection since I sold my old cheap MIM Fender Stratocaster a while back (I miss it - for a cheapy it was a good one once I upgraded a few things.)

Well, whats one to do - I suppose I could buy a new American Standard or a new plain old Standard Stratocaster and be done with it, but I'm feeling adventurous so I went out and bought a cheap base to build up from. I've read plenty of good stuff about the quality of the strat copies from Rondo Music - notably the Douglas line and their potential for project guitars. So I went online and bought me a Douglas SX Hawk RN QMD RDS for a whopping $119.00.

It showed up on my doorstep the other day and I'll tell you what - for $119.00 it's a very playable guitar once I overcame the horrible initial setup ,or lack of one, that was performed on it. I changed the strings, lowered the action a bit, and fixed the intonation a little bit and it plays quite well.

It's an Alder body with a Maple neck with a Rosewood fretboard - the top is a "Quilted Maple photo top finish" which I assume means there is a picture of the desired quilted maple look below the lacquer. I could care less how they did it - it looks beautiful.

The stock pickups, while nothing to write home about, provide that nice Fender Strat sound - too bad they are already on the chopping block as I've ordered a bunch of upgrades for it already (that was the plan all along.)

The neck is quite comfortable - feels quite similar to my old strat with the modern flat oval design. The fret job is not that bad - no sharp edges on the jumbo frets, they seem to be pretty smooth.

As noted above - this is going to be a small, inexpensive project guitar. It's purpose is for me to have some fun and to get that single coil vibe back into my collection. With that said, I've already ordered the following items for it.

  • GFS USA Custom Shop Hand Wired Pickguard Assembly (White w/ White Knobs, Premium Alnico Vintage pickups, 250k pots (looking for warmer more than brighter)
  • Black TUSQ XL Nut (PT-5043-00 - measured it and that seems to be the one)
  • GOTOH Locking Tuners (Gold Finish)
  • Replacement Tremolo block w/ Solid Steel one from Guitarfetish
  • A Pair of Gold roller string tree from Guitarfetish

That will be what I start with and we will see where it gets me. It's a relatively small investment (the pickguard costs more than the guitar) but. hopefully it will sound pretty good when I'm done.

Before: (we'll see about the later a little down the road)

It turns on when you put your foot on the pedal, and it springs back and turns of when you take your foot of, so you never have to worry about forgetting it in a middle position or something! :kickass:

For those interested in my amps I'm working on, here is my new workbench with a ton of toys I just bought for it....
