Cool video. Forgot just how dominant Kasparov was back in the day.

probably the greatest ever when comparing across eras (not an easy thing to do in a discipline that's always building on past innovations), although fischer peaked even higher and a handful of others (karpov, lasker, capablanca, alekhine, morphy, botvinnik) are in the conversation as well. it looked like carlsen would surely join that list in time, but he's been in decline for a while now so perhaps not.

Yeah, it's interesting to compare the greats throughout the eras. I've always wondered how Fischer would have fared in the modern era, and have the feeling he would have thrived considering just how good he was at thinking on his feet.

I'm sure you've seen this match before, but god damn, it's just insane to consider the level he was on.

computer programs have suggested that he was so ahead of his time and contemporaries that the 1971 version of fischer would've held his own against the kasparovs and carlsens, despite those guys having considerably more theory (including fischer's own games) and technology to work with. surely the most innately talented chess prodigy ever (maybe morphy was comparable, fischer himself thought so), but also a quintessential mad genius who was never gonna be able to sustain it for long.

i've been obsessively getting into the nba lately. shaq seems like the ronaldo (or indeed bobby fischer) of basketball, with a short unplayable peak followed by an early decline.

Couldn't agree with you more on both points.

I feel that if we could teleport a relatively sane Fischer to the modern day & let him observe some modern chess tactics he would probably wipe the floor with Carlsen & narrowly beat Kasparov. Morphy is another interesting chess cat, also quite insane in his own right. Ranking the all time chess players might look something like this:

Gold tier: Fischer, Morphy, Kasparov

Silver tier: Capablanca, Spassky, Karpov

Of course there are many more names, but I'm not too familiar with their styles as much as I am with the players above. Carlsen would probably make the bronze tier, though (Anand, too).

I've been playing a fair bit of basketball over the past two years. Up until than I had never played a game in my life. I'm a tall fella (6 foot 4) so I often play as the centre, unfortunately I am far too skinny too pull off anything remotely resembling Shaq!

Just stumbled upon this. Will give this a proper watch once I get home from work.

this wiki is worth a read if you haven't seen it--shows a bunch of a different attempts to decide on the best chess players. do you play chess yourself? i'm nothing special but i used to play for my county and have won a bit of money over the years.

i'm too small to be any use at basketball, i was a good shooter in school as long as nobody was defending on me lol.

Do you guys find interest in Tetris World Cups?

i've watched a few of the finals. jonas got dethroned by a teenage asian debutant this year iirc. once the rise of the asians begins there's no stopping them, i bet they'll be completely dominant within a decade.

Jonas got his dues finally? I seriously thought Jeff was gonna beat him in 2016 but it was no guess there.

Well damn, maybe Jonas will get his revenge next year.

Oh wow, congratulations mate! That's quite something that you've not only represented your county, but done so with success. I do play myself, only for recreation though and I dare say I'm nowhere near your level. Perhaps we could have a game of online chess one day.

That wiki is rather interesting. I had a quick glance and saw that the different metric produced vastly different rankings, so I'll have to have a more thorough look when I can to see just what exactly is being calculated there.

Haha, I am a lousy shot too. It's completely different taking a shot when the pressure is on, isn't it?
