Couldn't agree with you more on both points.
I feel that if we could teleport a relatively sane Fischer to the modern day & let him observe some modern chess tactics he would probably wipe the floor with Carlsen & narrowly beat Kasparov. Morphy is another interesting chess cat, also quite insane in his own right. Ranking the all time chess players might look something like this:
Gold tier: Fischer, Morphy, Kasparov
Silver tier: Capablanca, Spassky, Karpov
Of course there are many more names, but I'm not too familiar with their styles as much as I am with the players above. Carlsen would probably make the bronze tier, though (Anand, too).
I've been playing a fair bit of basketball over the past two years. Up until than I had never played a game in my life. I'm a tall fella (6 foot 4) so I often play as the centre, unfortunately I am far too skinny too pull off anything remotely resembling Shaq!
