Any one here religious?

When I'm reading this I see people doing allot of talking but not allot of listening. With all the talking that goes on here, I have never seen a person change their position. People like to argue just for arguments sake. Everyone seems to have the truth don't they? Opinions are like assholes, everyone has them and they all stink. This thread needs to be hijacked.

nah... gotta make it to 20 pages at least dammit.

I'm not going to waste time answering every "questionable" piece of Scripture just for the sake of argument, but I forgot about this post and it's actually very straightforward.

Are you kidding me? Did you actually read this love story?

Here's a wonderful example of love, Christian style:

If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered,he shall pay the girl’s father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

Deuteronomy 22:28-20 NIV

Here's an interesting reply from CJ Werelman:

There’s the slam dunk. How fortunate for the poor young lass that is brutally raped by a male attacker that she gains a husband out of it – the guy who raped her. Furthermore what of the penalty for the rapist? Fifty shekels, that’s all? God commands in Leviticus that a mean must be put to death for fucking a goat, but a payment of only a couple of dollars for raping a young girl?…

(I'm taking a sample from CJ Werelman's "God Hates You, Hate Him Back)

I've ordered this book. Can't wait till it shows up.:)

I think CJ Werelman seems to be approaching this piece of Scripture very recklessly...and if this is the way he approaches Scripture in general, then his book deserves little to no credibility.

First of all, the word "rape" can also mean an act of plunder or violation, and doesn't pertain only to forced sexual encounter (although in today's culture, it's basically the only thing that comes to mind with use of the word).

Read that passage a bit more carefully:

If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered...

Does that sound like a description of a "poor young lass that is brutally raped by a male attacker"? It sure doesn't to me. The phrase "happens to meet" sounds like normal human interaction and cannot be equated with the idea of "a male attacker", and the phrase "they are discovered" doesn't sound like a description of a forced sexual assault against a woman's will...it sounds like the description of consensual premarital sex. So in that context, I'd say paying the father some money and having to marry the girl sounds exactly like something that God would ask for.

Furthermore, consider the social ostracism a woman would have received in that day, for having casual sex... By God proclaiming that they be forced to marry, the woman is being spared an awful lot of pain from her peers.

Our friend CJ missed that one pretty badly...

I love your interpretation of "rape" as "premarital sex".
It sounds like date rape to me.. but since the floor is open for interpretation, it think what the bible actually means is: "If a man eats a sandwich which is not pledged to be eaten and eats it and they are discovered,he shall put mustard on his penis, stand on one leg and bark. He must eat the breadcrumbs upside down, for he has violated it. He can never poop as long as he lives."

Having to pretend that it means something different, so that you can keep believing in it must be easy!
