anybody else afraid that they will stop listening to metal?

I don't really think occupation should dictate a person's taste in music either if that's the case...

Conformist!

seriously. i know people look down on it, but as long as you do good work, who cares what you listen to? ive had certain people look down on me for listening to metal, but no one can deny that i do kickass work

nobody is going to control what I do in my free time. I will likely lose interest in metal however as I will probably view it as something for kids when I am 26 or 27.

Not me. I have been listening to metal since the early 80's and still love it. There have been times I wondered what I would be doing when I was old. Those times were never based on a fading interest, just on a funny picture in my mind of an old withered man listening to metal. Though I am 40, I don't feel I am "old" yet, and maybe that's the way I will always feel. I work in the professional world, and I don't necessarily go around broadcasting to everyone what kind of music I like. It's not relevant at work. I do mention it here or there among those I know better, but generally I am just a person. I don't think position in life has anything to do with what you listen to, unless you are very concerned with what other people think of you...and you seem like that might be pretty important to you.

But look how popular metal was, and then wasn't. Where are all those people that are my age that should love metal? You just don't find that many. Yes there are some of us, but not nearly as many as there were in the mid-later 80's. So what that says to me is that not every metal fan is really a true metal fan. Maybe a lot of people get into it for the trend or the rebellion or from peer pressure or because of someone they think is cool or whatever. I am not really sure. I can't really understand because I used to like it, and I still like it. How can your taste change that much? I wonder if it really does, or if for many people they were never really into the music.

Your statement also seems to indicate that maybe you really do like Maiden and Metallica, but maybe with the more brutal side of things you can appreciate it, but it's not really your cup of tea. Unless you are thinking entirely of your image and how you want to be perceived at that age (by yourself or by others).

Lifestyle changes should not dictate your taste in music.

I knew a guy I used to work with who was selling all of his metal because he had a 3 year old daughter or some shit.

So what? Just don't listen to it when she's around..

I love all metal from NWOBHM to thrash to grind death doom black progressive power etc...

I dunno man, I think it would be extremely strange if I was some executive in a company and then went home and listened to suffocation and morbid angel.

This makes no sense.

Just because you are and angsty testosterone fueled 15-22 child doesn't mean everybody who listens to metal is like that.

I'm currently 26 and make a decent living and I have a good position where I work. Nobody really cares about the music I listen to as long as I perform well in my job. Why would it be impossible to be succesful and still like metal music? I don't seem to have this problem. And I don't think I'll stop listening to metal soon...

I just don't look metal and I rarely talk about music here anyway. I don't really care about the music my coworkers listen to and I guess that's pretty much the same for them.

Why are you afraid of that? If you musical preferences change and you enjoy other kinds of music why bother about it? And if you think that being 26 and listening to Nile is "lame" because of you're "too old for that kind of music" then you need to stop being an idiot.

Exactly. What you listen to does not define you in any way. You're probably just "afraid" of the fact that nobody will accept your taste, therefore you would have to change. Either way, who cares What you listen to. If anyone judges me by my musical taste I put them on auto-idiot.

Why should your life-style change your musical taste?

no actually, metal is plenty popular among 18-24 year old (white males). Metallica has sold 90 million albums for god sakes.

No, actually if you look at the entire continuum of musicical genres metal is a small niche. I'm not talking about your circle of friends, your town, your state, your country, I'm talking the world. Someone like Michael Jackson or Alanis Morrisette has probably sold as many albums as nearly all metal acts combined. I don't have any numbers in front of me, but the point shouldn't even need to be argued, metal has never been a dominant force in popular music let alone ALL music. Pull your head out, Dave.

iron maiden, metallica, and megadeth have sold a combined total of 170+ million albums. metal is plenty popular.
