Is he fucking amazing or what? Just before the end of The Lotus Eater he performs one of the most stunning examples of speed drumming ever heard in metal! I take my hat off to you Martin!:notworthy

He is amazing ... yet still, at some few parts of the album, especially in Derelict Herds, I wonder how Lopez would have sounded, with more groovy drumming. Not saying this to criticize Axe though ;)

It's great that they chose another type of drummer and not a replacement for Lopez, I think Lopez was perfect for the mellow side and Axe for the heavier side, both are great.

Hes a great metal drummer, but to be honest, I really don't love his work in Opeth that much. Am I the only person who noticed that they pretty much went without drums during all the soft sections? Before when they hit an acoustic passage, Lopez would often accompany with a light fusion beat, instead now, almost all the soft sections just have no drums at all, or in just one or two spots, its what would be a softer section, but Axe's drumming still sounds rather heavy, and make it more of a metal section with acoustic guitars. Either way, its not really to my taste, and I think that's really the one reason that's keeping me from fully enjoying Watershed.

Lopez is and always will be my favorite drummer...his style is unmatched. But yeah, Axe is pretty fucking tight...

It's a pretty good feeling to know that your favorite band finally has a reliable and fantastic drummer.

I pretty much agree. I love Axe's style and sound, but it just doesn't cut it for me. Lopez inspired me to start playing drums and had such a more interesting and awesome sound.

Although (judging from album performances) I would have picked Lopez over Axe, I think "reliability" is what matters for the health of the band. Axe is a great drummer, plus, it's only his first album yet. He's pretty much able to play everything, and I wonder how he'll develop in Opeth.

I think Opeth have been really lucky in getting replacements for the leaving members. Akesson is one of the best guitarists you could have in your metal band, definitely a better guitar player than Lindgren. At least in live shows he doesn't look like he's about to miss a note. I loved Lindgren's solos, though. Everyone did.

i liked lopez's bossa nova sounding stuff, like his claves, but axe can play that stuff too so i dont mind. they both seem like nice, but axe seems like a committed and reliable guy for the band so i dont mind that lopez had to leave because axe is great too

Its not really a question of who is better for Opeth - Axe or Lopez? - its more that with Axe's style the band can progress in different ways than in the past... which what we all want.. I think that Fredrik Akesson joining the band is the same :)
So with the two line up changes it can take Opeth to new places

The only option they had was the find a different style of drummer.

Lopez is not replaceable.

I love Axe. He has definitely grown on me. Him and Fred.
