Since there's already a big four of thrash, I'm wondering what other genres you think could have a big four. You could add any genre you like. Here's my picks.

The definition for the big four of thrash is solely commercial success, need to remember that.

Melodic death metal

In Flames
Children of Bodom
Dark Tranquility
At the Gates

CoB being melodeath is disputed, especially when they had their commercial breakthrough. The big four of melodeath could be something like:

In Flames
Dark Tranquillity
Amon Amarth
Amorphis

Similarly to IF, Amorphis drifted away from melodeath but made considerable success in album sales during the era. "Tales from the Thousand Lakes" has sold more than 250 000 copies, and I've seen some figures of "Elegy" going past the 100 000 mark.

Instead of Running Wild for speed metal, I probably would of put Iced Earth in there place. But that's just me, two excellent bands either way.

If we are going by what the big four meant in thrash, not including Cannibal Corpse in death metals big four is retarded.

Cannibal Corpse should be in the big 4 of Death Metal. Get Anal Cunt out of Grindcore, and put in Carcass or Brutal Truth!
Edit: Carcass is already in Goregrind, but I feel like they belong in simple Grindcore.

Pretty good lists. Good to see Skyclad getting some love.
I'd have put Die Krupps in the Industrial list and Symphony X in the prog metal list though, and maybe Entombed in the DM list.

I hate when people regard Children of Bodom as Melodic Death Metal. It really makes no sense to me.

Personally, I'd change these ones

Symphonic metal

Nightwish
Kamelot
Epica
Within Temptation

Folk metal

Eluveitie
Finntroll
Enisferum
Korpiklanni

Power metal

Stratovarius
Helloween
Blind Guardian
Gamma Ray
