Black Metal.

But not necessarily the other way around. I'm not a big aficionado of Darkspace, tbh...pretty boring and featureless. Paysage is way more harsh and in-your-face sounding, and I love Wintherr's insanely inventive use of violins and keyboard flourishes in the context of blasting wintry ferocious black metal. Fucking great stuff.

Does anyone listen/like the upstate New York band Night Conquers Day?

I think their second (and unfortunately last) album is absolutely amazing.

Also, does anyone know any similar bands? Basically similar bands that have that atmospheric, almost symphonic sound, but still keeping that sorta raw garage-y guitar tone.

They remind me of Empyreal Destroyer. You'd probably also like Dawn of Dreams.

Just quickly sampled both, neither reminded me of NCD tbh, they were both borderline melodic death metal. But I did enjoy Dawn of Dreams. Not really what I'm looking for but thanks for the recs anyway.

I have both Night Conquers Day albums because I'm a fucking cool guy. Rebellion is the Art of Survival is clearly the better of the two. Little known fact: John Gallo briefly played keyboards with the band between the two albums during live shows (there's a video on youtube). Mikael's main post-NCD project, Tearstained, is more straightforward old school black metal with more Bathory and less symphony but especially the first album, Monumental in its Sorrow, should appeal to most fans of NCD.

I've only heard some of the later stuff of Tearstained, and it was pretty much Mercyful Fate with an even more annoying falsetto. (the old house on the hillside! the old house on the hillside! :erk:)

*Mountainside, and that track sounds like King Diamond, not Mercyful Fate.

Second album: Buy Here

third album: Buy Here

The third album, Final Thoughts, is his best, but the first one is the most like Night Conquers Day. The fourth album is an inconsistent and sterile attempt at primitive, Necrovorean death metal, and the newest one is a bit all over the place, including more King Diamond influence.

Those tracks are a lot better than the ones I've heard. I'll look into the earlier Tearstained albums. Thanks
