I think it takes more skill to write something nice and melodic, than it does to write something br00tal and cacophonic. That's just my opinion though, correct me if I'm wrong.

I see that you're "aka Pimpbot 5000." If you're someone different than who I'm thinking of, this will seem random and stupid... but did you used to go to GameFAQs.com, particularly Perfect Dark *Social?*

I should know better than to think so, but I do think so. I mean you can be as technical or as brutal as you want. A new band comes out every week more brutal, fast, technical, heavy, noisy, whatever than the last, but writing genuinely catchy or downright beautiful melodies is a challenge, and doing so doesn't make your music girly or happy.

I'm not saying melodic is better(although I think so), it's just that it takes more skill to do right that a random barrage of riffs, screams, and drumming.

Definitely brutal....but a touch of melody is always nice.

I can second that, but I prefer brutal above all!

Post Scriptum:
You might wanna check out Kataklysm if you, of course, not already are familiar with them. They fit into this description of very brutal and technical stuff mixed with melodies - without softening the sound at all... Kataklysm fucking rules!

Katakysm are a great band.

Erm I ain't going to vote because I like both. Just wondered, what would you call Vader, I suppose it depends on what you prefer, If you like In Flames, Vader would seem quite brutal, but if you like Suffocation, Immolation etc. In would sound melodic.

Anyway, Vader are one of my favourites, as are Immolation, Amon Amarth, Nile and Dark Tranquility.

Damn hard choice :yell:

Nah, the only place I've been Pimpbot5000 was at the official IMBB. Its good to see that there are other Conan O'Brian fans out there though

I probably prefer Melodic...Mainly because I love black metal, and am just getting into brutal death..When I say Melodic, I don't mean shit like In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Arch Enemy, Callensih Circle or other 'happy' bands ..More like Unanimated, Necrophobic, Sacramentum(newer), Swordmaster etc..

Both can be challenging, but in different ways. In melodic death, the songwriting is often based around more traditional rock structures and melodies. Certainly much catchier and more immediate in its effects, but like a more traditional rock song, it will take an extra something to make it memorable and have a lasting impression.

Brutal death, in some ways, is a totally different writing process. Traditional melodies song structures are rare, and odd meters and tempo changes are abundant. There's less in the way of formulas and templates for the musicians to work off of, which obviously allows a lot of freedom in the writing process. But yeah, anyone with technical ability can throw together a random barrage of riffs and parts, and make a whole song out of it... a LOT of bands suffer from this. But when they can channel that musical freedom, it creates some very original and inspired-sounding music. Bands like Immolation, Gorguts, Suffocation, Commit Suicide and others have accomplished this and made some of my favorite music. And yeah, any band that's still concerned with outdoing everyone in brutality/speed/heaviness/etc. is just plain stupid. That ship has sailed. If they lack the sonwriting back it up, it won't really matter.

While many melodic death bands like ATG, Dark Tranquility, Amon Amarth, and Garden of Shadows rank among my favorites, I still prefer the more brutal side.

melodic definitely.

most of the brutal stuff i've heard is just annoying noise

brutal is fun at times, but usually when i listen to music i wanna hear melodies

buuut i must say the uber-melodic tilulilu stuff with tons of solo's annoys me too
