Can anything truly "new" be done with metal?

...and Oceans - A.M.G.O.D. and Cypher are not shit, they are rather amazing albums, both for different reasons that do not apply to their first two albums.

I can see the dislike towards Cypher, but as to why anyone who enjoys black metal and electronica at all, would dislike AMGOD I have no clue.

It is such an amazingly well-done album, and blends the electronic and metal elements into one, almost perfectly.

Only The Kovenant - Animatronic has done it better.

I fucking hate this incorporation of industrial/electronica/etc. elements into Metal. Like I said before, it's just adding crap to a base. Pretentious shit as far as I'm concerned. I've never heard anything good come out of these experimentations, and if this is the direction toward which Metal as a whole is headed, I fear for any other type of potential evolution in Metal. A complete and utter abomination.

*purist

Eh, it's not like it's a conscious effort. I've actually listened to and evaluated these bands, and I just can't stomach them. It's not really about "keeping the purity of Metal" or any gay shit like that, it's just that I think if this is the primary route for the future of Metal, then I think alternative avenues will be overlooked and there will be too many intersections.

Eh. I suppose I could see your dislike for the principles behind it, but ah well. Two different opinions.

METAL WILL BE COMBINED WITH SWING TO MAKE SWING METAL!

"The riff ," IS metal. To abandon that means you abandon metal which is why I gave my post above.

Not really. By "riff" i'm referring to a repeating series of notes used to provide a backbone for the song. Its not only a characteristic of metal - every form of modern music from pop to techno uses this. What i'm proposing is something more continuous, an extended form of the riff. The chorus of Emperor's Thus Spake The Nightspirit is a good example - flowing but with very little repetition, its not strictly a riff yet everyone regards it as metal. Extend that to a whole song and the result would be amazing.

.....AND ANOTHER THING! EVEN THE GAY GUY GETS THE GIRL!!!!!

Moral of the story: Dress METAL, get the CHICKS!

When I see denim and leather (both of which I'm not a fan of) and spikes I think of 80's hair bands. I don't think that has anything to do with Metal today. Long hair and black, however, does.

I think there is plenty of potential for new stuff to be done with metal, regardless of whether or not any of us can think of it. I'm sure countless people said Death Metal was dead in the mid 90's or that no one could ever do anything new with BM after the first wave.

Nobody can predict the style of a genre before its been conceptualized... so you people saying that there wont be any new metal genres, simply based on the fact that you dont have any good ideas, does not mean that someone else won't invent something ingenious.

I'm sure Black Sabbath didn't anticipate grindcore.

I have yet to hear anything really, really good come out of the electronica/industrial influenced metal. There's shit like newer ...and Oceans, and there's Blut Aus Nord's newer direction, which I'm not too fond of. Has anyone figured this sort of thing out yet.

I think Garm's remix of Emperor's Sworn is actually pretty good, but I haven't heard anything of that sort done on a wider scale.

How about Aborym, Godflesh, The Axis of Perdition, Red Harvest or Void of Silence?

I don't see how adding different elements to metal isn't expanding it... it's changing what can be done with heavy music and what is accepted in metal music. I see that as change, but maybe I'm alone. Death Metal isn't pure, its a combination of different influences that created a heavy sounding form of metal. Nothing was ever totally pure, everyone was influenced by something, except maybe the first guy to play a guitar.

Well in my opinion, the limit of speed and brutality have reached its peak, but rhythm wise and melody wise, there will always be creativity.

Since when was industrial and electronica Metal?
