Come up with a reason that would not make Opeth the greatest band in the world

"Ps. HaloPhenomenon, please stop embarassing yourself by speaking of "experimental" music anymore. Thanks."
Okay, now what do you mean?

I mean that Opeth can hardly be called experimental. Let's not start a fight over this now, I have to go to sleep :)
PEAC EOUT

You can't have a band thats best in every aspect (well maybe). Even if you covered everything, a new genre or style could pop up out of no where and then you don't cover it? Best overall band is a much better way to judge under specific universal criteria that apply to every genre and style...

Do I sound hostile? I hope not. Look, all I'm trying to say that arguing over opinions leads nowhere. And Opeth are my favourite band too. And whether "the greatest band" -status can be considered subjective... well, that could be discussed. I think that's basically what should be going on here.

what makes you so hostile around here?...all im saying was that i think that opeth is the best band.. nothing personal, nothing serious.
Things can get pretty hostile around here. Know this before you step in. ;)

To put it another way:
What the "greatest band" is obviously depends on the listener. OK?
Whether the "greatest band" title can be granted to a band that's not the greatest in EVERY aspect of music should also depend on the listener. OK?
So, every one of us can call *INSERT BAND NAME* "the greatest band in the world" happily. Peace and flowers!
:)

Damn Halo, Congradualtions! You had over 1,200 people look at this thread and It was only made 2 days ago, and 130 responces! That may be a record.

I think it´s experimental, doesnt combining genres like none has done before count as experimental?...or does it has to be something completely new like sunn0))))?

I'm not trying to be hostile, I'm sorry if I sound like that. It just caught my eye when you said something like "Opeth are one of the most experimental bands" which it certainly isn't. In my opinion to be called "experimental" requires that the subject EXPERIMENTS a lot, I don't think Opeth does that. Yes, they're pretty original and unique, yes, they try some new stuff now and then, but there are bands/artists that are ALL about experimenting, creating something new constantly. I'm not saying it's always succesful though. I hope I got myself through. :)

well...anyone can pretty mutch have an opinnion about anything, witch most threads have...i dont see those threads any better than this... All meant to start an intresting conversation...

Time to end this thread.

To quote Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (that bloke who wrote Sherlock Holmes):
"Mediocrity knows nothing higher than itself, but talent instantly recognises genius."

As much as talent can be measured on some kind of scale, it will always be subjective, eg. as music-makers, Opeth are more talented than Britney Spears, but the ignorance of many people will cause them to not accept that fact, purely because Opeth do not make mediocre, commercially-friendly music.

This is a forum, a place to speak your mind. I believe that there is no 'greatest band in the world', because there is no uniformity to music. There are too many factors that come into play that are way too immeasurable to come to a definite conclusion.

and.. yeah..

Bah, screw it, no sleep tonight.

HaloPhenomenon: I'm not trying to start a fight, relax :) I'm sure no one really means anything bad. You should have seen how this forum was like a while ago, people were virtually chopping each other's heads off.

Maybe we could start another thread on what's experimental! I know what you meant by saying that, but it was perhaps just a bit misleading, because of the genre called "experimental" which has nothing to do with Opeth.

let's take In The Woods for example:

- they had great melodies
- awesome lyrics
- they were technically flawless
- their albums had a very intense atmosphere
- they were far more experimental than Opeth
