controversial movie/book/non-metal music opinions thread

Fuck yeah. The later books... they stop being children's books. She wrote the later books specifically for the audience of the first few, grew the books up as the readers grew up.

The movies can suck a nut though.

Book 6 is decent. Most of the others suck though, save maybe the fourth book.

Crappy series overall tbqh, interesting world but too much boring and cliche stuff happens within it.

Really? I thought the 5th one was boring as fuck.

Yeah, it's the worst by far. The earlier ones in the series are pretty crappy too, but at least they have brevity on their side.

people who think the harry potter movies all suck can go fuck themselves as far as i'm concerned. 1 was too light-hearted and gimmicky in the same way the 1st book was, the 2nd film was finding its feet like the 2nd book was but it was good, the third film is basically fucking amazing and beautifully directed, the fourth film is kind of retarded and convoluted (much moreso than the book), the fifth film was again pretty superb film-making.

don't agree AT ALL that HP is just empty and clichéd either, it gets really messy and wild thematically, and there's this building sense of dread and horror that is made all the more potent somehow by its essentially being a children's series. there's real thematic meat, i mean it's symbols galore, the way it handles harry shouldering his severe symbolic baggage, his relationship to his dead parents, the villain as his inner demons etcetc is really fucking deft. rowling's no stylist, but her strengths outweigh her generic tone for me. i can think of several moments that are quite breathtaking in their complexity.

not that there aren't a ton of flaws, these are not masterpieces by any stretch.

Anyone else think Julie Andrews is kinda hot in that movie?

Edit: Haha Vihris. I had the page loaded for a while and didn't see your post.

like Leonardo DiCaprio playing a French guy who sounds American. You're actors, can't you be bothered to, uh, you know, act?

I beg to differ
Leonardo DiCaprio's work in Blood Diamond is superb. He pulled off the Afrikaans accent really well IMO.

Of course you have stubborn pricks like His Highness Sean Connery :D, who potrays a Russian maritime General albeit with a Scottish accent.

If his accent skills are so amazing, why didn't he use them at all in The Man in the Iron Mask? He played a French king and talked like an American. Really annoys me.

I hate it when actors put on uberly fake accents. Americanized British accents sound awful and almost all attempts at Russian accents I've heard sound horribly bad, and are quite laughable.

If they can't act like the person they're supposed to be portraying, they shouldn't be in the movie at all tbh.

I just looked up Julie Andrews.

WAT

Julie Andrews is hot in The Sound of Music. How gracefully she aged beyond that point is another matter.
