controversial movie/book/non-metal music opinions thread

That is hardly controversial at all. Though there of course, are extremes in both sides (extreme wankery vs retardedly simplistic).

I guess something like that would be more controversial on a punk forum than a metal forum.

The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie was a fun and very good movie.
The second movie was boring, and I haven't seen the whole movie of the third movie, but from I have seen bored me too.

Controversial opinions:

The Band is great, but I really only enjoy a handful of their songs (them being "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," "The Weight," "Acadian Driftwood," and "Up On Cripple Creek").

Although I do like him and respect him beyond words, I do not enjoy listening to Bob Dylan. I would much rather listen to Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Waits or Bruce Springsteen before Dylan (which is funny, because they were all influenced by him).

Live is the best 90s band.

THIS. I'd rather listen to Lightfoot than any of them probably. Neil Young too.

I actually didn't list Neil Young because he's sometimes difficult for me to listen to as well, although I definitely prefer him over Dylan.

The reason I respect and enjoy Lightfoot so much is that he truly was a prolific songwriter with lyrics to rival Dylan's. That, and he wrote some gorgeous melodies and possesses a strong singing voice, which Dylan lacks.

Of that list, however, I would pick Waits as my number one favorite. The man is a musical, not to mention comic, genius.

I never got into Waits and haven't liked much I've heard by him. Really polarizing character, apparently, so I'm not surprised.

Lightfoot fucking rules.

He is very polarizing. I listened to his old material first and enjoyed it, but when my older brother played Rain Dogs for me I was immediately turned off by it. Now, years later, Rain Dogs is one of my favorite records of all time and I prefer Waits's newer material to his older stuff. It's much more experimental and comically macabre.

EDIT: as far as Lightfoot goes, all his early records are phenomenal acoustic folk. I'd suggest The Way I Feel for his more acoustic-based stuff.

Tom Waits is so varied that it's hard to pin down one record. I'd suggest Rain Dogs, but most people find that album a bit inaccessible. It takes some getting used to.

Here's an example of Waits's "weirder" side:

Versus his more traditional side:
